As Shelley Freydont I write amateur sleuth mysteries. As Shelley Noble I write women's fiction. We both love small towns with big dreams and deep secrets. Shelley is the author of the Katie McDonald ad Lindy Haggerty mystery series, and the upcoming Liv Montgomery, Celebration Bay Festival Mysteries (Berkeley Prime Crime). Her first women’s fiction novel, Beach Colors, will be published by William Morrow in 2012. A former professional dancer and choreographer, she most recently worked on the films, Mona Lisa Smile and The Game Plan.

Asked to direct a theatrical revue for the Mischief Night Marathan Halloween celebration, former dancer and amateur sleuth Lindy Haggerty finds herself investigating a series of bizarre and frightening practical jokes that reveal all too much about Lindy's neighbors, but the tricks take a deadly turn when sexy dilettante Derrick Justin is found dead.

After an extended business trip in Europe, Lindy Haggerty is happy to be home though her husband and their daughter are in Europe and their son in Boston. The only family member around to keep Lindy company, is her son's dirty dog. However, in a definite weak moment or perhaps the beginning of senility, Lindy agrees to direct an amateur production during the town's Halloween carnival as part of the Mischief Night Marathon.

However, the friendly intent at the onset quickly converts into people battling over the events. Soon someone takes the squabbles up a notch with pranks based on Spencer's Seven Deadly Sins. The antics start turning nastier and uglier until murder finally occurs. The killer turns towards Lindy as the eighth sinner worthy of death unless the retired dancer can find a different ending to this drama that allows her to voice the final coda.

The fourth Lindy Haggerty amateur sleuth mystery, Halloween Murder, is a fun who-done-it that sub-genre readers will enjoy because the plot seems real due to the bickering of the ensemble cast that makes up the Mischief Night Marathon committee. The story line engages the audience from the very beginning when Lindy, feeling like a sucker, lectures the dirty dog snoozing in her car until the final curtain call. Series fans will relish this Halloween treat while newcomers will commence with a Shelley Freydont marathon.

Halloween is coming up, and the town is getting ready for the Marathon. Lindy is the main character. The retired English teacher is Janey, and the current English teacher is Melanie. Melanie, with Janey's assistance when needed, directs the teens in the play. This is a mystery, so bodies are found.

The hermit herb-growing story-teller was kind of interesting, even though his character wasn't very well developed.

This book should have been told on one-fourth as many pages. It was long, drawn-out, dry, boring, and had empty pages. It was literally a torture to finish it. I kept on reading, hoping it would get better, but it didn't.

There was no charm, coziness, warmth, comfort, or cleverness.

It usually only takes me a few days, or a week at the most, to finish a book. But this book took weeks. The atmosphere was not good, nor was it well-developed. There were too many characters. Characters were not well developed. There were unanswered curiosities. The mystery part was not done very good. This ending was not satisfying. (Except for the fact that I was finally finished with the book.)

To sum it up, this book was horrible.

I enjoyed the story but would like to see a bit better pacing. Otherwise it's fine. ;-)

Not even Babe Ruth hit a home run every time.

This is a fine author and an easy to read mystery. The story line is good and entertaining
