Also by cassandra chan. This was mere masochism on Bethancourt’s part, as he was an avid amateur detective who followed Gibbons’s cases closely and would only be disappointed if an interesting case was to come up now, just when he could not take part in it. There is a case, affirmed Gibbons sunnily. I just got the call and I’m on my way over to the Yard in an hour to meet with Superintendent Brumby. Splendid, said Bethancourt, although there was a slightly hollow tone to his voice. He sat down in the chair by the window and lit a cigarette. I’m to get briefed on the Ashdon killer, said Gibbons.

Jodie Farrady, a former bookshop employee who disappeared about a year ago, is found strangled in that same shop Christmas morning. The modus operandi is similar to the serial killer's, but not exactly the same. It could be a copycat. It could be a coincidence. Either way, Jack could certainly use his good friend's help as he investigates the citizens of a Yorkshire that has suddenly turned quite deadly. Luckily, Phillip is all too eager to escape his own holiday and join the hunt.

This is one of a series of novels featuring Scotland Yard detective sergeant Jack Gibbons and his aristocrat friend Phillip Bethancourt. Gibbons has been sent north to York to investigate a murder that may be the work of a serial killer. Then two more murders occur. They do not seem to be connected because the circumstances are different. But maybe they are. The investigation uncovers details of people's pasts, and questions about the business dealings of one of the victims. Things gradually come together as the police close in on a killer.

I like English mysteries because there are fewer guns and more investigation. This novel uses all the modern features of computer searches and up-to-date forensic science. People have mobile phones and contend with rainy English weather and flooded roads. There is even some snow.

On the side, you have Phillip's love life and his unexpected meeting with a woman who had been his teenage girlfriend - they had a torrid teenage affair and had been caught once snogging it in the backroom of a shop. People are never the same if you have a reunion years later. You can't go home again, and sometimes its better to just retain pleasant memories.

Just finished reading Spider On the Stairs and enjoyed it so much that I'm going to immediately order another book in the series. I hope the author is already at work on her next book!

The mystery was good, the situation believable, setting intriguing and, best of all, the characters well drawn and likable. I recommend this author to those who enjoy the kind of work that was done by writers like Sayers, Tey, Allingham and Christie, classic mystery authors, and by modern favorites like Deborah Crombie and Louise Penny.

Literally could not put this one down ... well, could but very reluctantly.

A fan of Bethancourt and Gibbons from the beginning, this one is the most intriguing of all. I love the cosy way it surrounded me with the comforts and eccentricities of life in England while reminding me of the incessantly dreary winter weather, all the while intertwining whimsy and mayhem. Even in the heat of summer, I felt curled up in front of a hearth fire, wrapped in something soft and wooly. It was really a marvelous read.

I won't go into the plot here, since I hate spoilers, but must say I fell for a red herring or two, but found the resolve totally believable.

More, more, please of this crime-fighting (well, crime-solving) duo.

A little derivative, but that's to be expected since the author is not, after all, a British chap. That being said, the story was engaging and a good summer read. I missed the connection with the spider, however. Guess that's my fault.
Gietadia
Likable main characters, interesting twists in plot. Enjoyed scenery and local descriptions. Liked the various additional characters and what they added to the story.
PC-rider
Entertaining, predictable and a bit presumptuous.
