Mary Roberts Rinehart. Elizabeth Wheeler lives in a small town, sings in the church choir, and dreams of a man who will sweep her off her feet. In her day, Mary Roberts Rinehart was known as the "American Agatha Christie," which is quite a sign of respect given that Christie is one of the greatest mystery writers in history. Rinehart's works are also still popular today.

I think when Mary Roberts Rinehart tried to write with a man as the narrator she went pretty much off the track. Both the Man in Lower Ten and The Window at the White Cat are so so stories but they lack something that most of her stories which are female narrated have in abundance. Maybe it is because when she writes as a man narrator she tries to put a lot of humor in the portrayal of the man.

Mary Roberts Rinehart. In my criminal work anything that wears skirts is a lady, until the law proves her otherwise. From the frayed and slovenly petticoats of the woman who owns a poultry stand in the market and who has grown wealthy by selling chickens at twelve ounces to the pound, or the silk sweep of Mamie Tracy, whose diamonds have been stolen down on the avenue, or the staidly respectable black and middle-aged skirt of the client whose husband has found. an affinity partial to laces and fripperies, and has run off with her-all the wearers are ladies, and as such announced by Hawes.

When wealthy Eliza Fairbanks becomes convinced that someone has put bats in her bedroom and arsenic on her strawberries, shrewd Miss Pinkerton is assigned to watch her--but someone more dangerous may be watching as well

I think the word "Haunted" in the title is misleading and would put some people off as it would cause them to think this is about the "spirit" world. It is not at all. It's an excellent story in the Rinehart style with a very large house, an old woman that someone is trying to scare to death, a locked room murder, some romance, some tragedy, several very interesting characters and a great ending. Also, of course, there is Miss Pinkerton, always a joy to read about. I really enjoyed it.

I don't want to give away any key plot points, so I'll just say that I felt that Nurse Hilda Adams (aka Miss Pinkerton) did an awfully slow job of analyzing the evidence presented to her. I really expected a much tighter mystery, or at least more compelling writing. This novel read more like something tossed together to meet a deadline or satisfy a nagging publisher. I would actually give this book 2 1/2 stars, not three.
