On Saturday 5th April 1975, in a fit of rage, Paul Townley took the life of his father, Harold. The significance of that single event was to affect the rest of his life, as he resolved to make it his mission to rid society of the kind of person that the man had become. The first killing took place six months later, and over the following fifteen years seventeen more were to follow, as the trail of devastation left by a serial killer covered the length and breadth of England. Detective Chief Inspector Colin Barnes looked down at the letter which lay on the desk before him. An icy hand gripped his heart as he read once more the details of the eighteen murders. Murders which had come back to haunt him from his past as he realised that he would, once more, be faced with the serial killer who called himself ......Petey.

Two Little Dicky Birds is a psychological thriller that keeps the reader engaged following the career of a serial killer and the New Scotland Yard officers that are trying to catch him. This first novel, by Neal James delivers with a one, two punch. The past and present intertwine creating a complex plot and series of subplots.
The story begs to be read. With the brevity of the chapters, I found myself reading on and on way past the time I should have turned out the light. I wanted to know what happened next. I found myself routing for the officers, and hoping that the serial killer would leave something behind so they could catch him.
The taunting personality of Peter T. and the dedication of Paul B. add to the depth of the novel. Events that shaped their lives and the way they both turned out are proof that genetics aren’t the only factor in the making of the man.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Two Little Dicky Birds. I’m a new fan of Neal James!

A psychological thriller revolving around a UK serial killer and the efforts to catch him. The novel is well written and quick to read--I read it in three days--yet a very complex story none-the-less that jumps back and forth between two storylines: one in 2002, after police receive a letter from the serial killer who has stopped for a decade and is giving them four weeks to find him before he resumes; the other is back during the 15 year killing spree in the 70's. The author well handles the difficult task of multiple/intertwined plots in the book.

The format of the novel worked well. Short chapters, each covering a single day, moving back and forth between the two timelines and at times, skipping as much as five years in the older one. This allowed for the story to remain well focused at all times on a primary overall plot and at no time does it veer away from the action. Also, it caused me to continually say "OK, one more chapter" and before I knew it, that would turn into reading a hundred pages. The story is richer and more complex than the run-of-the-mill mystery novel and was a quick, highly engaging read.

This is a psychological thriller about a serial killer and the efforts to catch him. I could not say that I enjoyed this book and when I was barely one-third into the book, I became frustrated at the inability of the CIB to bring this serial killer down. Fifteen years and eighteen murders beggars belief. Nevertheless, the novel is a well written complex story and the author juggles multiple plots so well that it is hard to put the book down. Short chapters moving constantly between two timelines sounds complicated but the story flows well, a compliment to the skills of the writer.

I greatly enjoyed Two Little Dicky Birds. The plot set-up was quite intriguing, and I felt somewhat sympathetic for the killer...somewhat. The hunt to find him is definitely movie-worthy. I'm sure people who watch 48 Hours and other murder mystery shows would really get into this book.
