Once I was able to face that as a specific problem, my mind began to work better. I mechanically made my bed and cleaned up the few dishes I had used, while I perfected a plan that should work properly. Other author's books: John D MacDonald - You Live Once.

I fed my martini hunger on spaghetti al dente with sailor sauce, read the evening paper’s rehash of our big murder and went back to my apartment. d to walk off the spaghetti heaviness. It was just getting dark. Children shrilled and leaped the barberry hedges. I walked by the yellow house and wondered which window was Toni’s. I guess I walked aimlessly for nearly an hour, turning right or left on impulse, but gradually circling back toward my place. I suddenly remembered the trash, and my promise to Mrs. Speers

Now that I have read every Travis McGee novel at least two times over the past year. I am reading his pre Travis McGee books. I am of the personal opinion that I am very jaded to the writings of JDM. If you like Travis McGee, this protagonist in this short novel could be his uncle or even his dad. If you like Travis McGee this is a great read.

I think when the publishers ask JDM to write a series of books with a single character he must have pooled from the various characters he had invented to launch Travis McGee.

I found a web site that allowed me to download over 20 of his pre Travis McGee novels. I am now in the process of reading all of these books and can honestly see why he is one of the great authors of all time, not just of our day or of American literature. Far be it from me to try and write a book review to do his book any justice. I just feel privileged to have picked up a copy of The Green Ripper at Miami airport on a business trip from LAX to MIA in 1987. JDM became my reading Cocaine.

You Live Once is very much a run of the mill murder mystery or "whodunit". Mary Olan, a young woman with a boatload of inherited wealth has been strangled to death. Clint Sewell, one of the major suspects in the case, serves as narrator.

I'm sorry to say that this 1950s paperback original by legendary author John D, MacDonald is a big disappointment. The only good thing about You Live Once is that it's mercifully short. The premise behind the story is ill-conceived, the plotting has a herky-jerky quality to it and most of the characters are poorly fleshed out.

Of the many novels written by the usually excellent John D. MacDonald, this has to rank as one of the worst. Not recommended.
Tyler Is Not Here
You could feel MacDonald coming to grips with writing good fiction, not quite detective fiction but verging. Became a little complicated near the end, but all in all, a satisfying work.
