The last installment of the vastly underrated Weiss-Bishop trilogy, with Damnation Street, Andrew Klavan has accomplished a remarkable feat The second book, "Gunshot Alley" was better than the first, the very good "Dynamite Road," and this last book is superior to its predecessors. At times it is tense, at times seemingly surreal, at times remarkably human, the search by Weiss (now estranged from Bishop) for the the previously unseen prostitute that haunts his lonely heart links him with the professional killer also on her trail and out to control her in the name of perverse desire. There will be an ultimate confrontation here between Weiss, the veteran cop turned private investigator, and John Foy,triple-armed and dangerous. Both know it throughout the story, because through Weiss, Foy expects to find his ideal and seclude her until death do they part. Weiss, intuitive, even brilliant, but inherently gentle, is at a distinct disadvantage, and knows he will in all probability die, for he "is not a killing man."

Klavan is a far better writer than Cornell Woolrich, the Hitchkockian novelist to whom he is most often compared. His prose sings to a rythmic beat, without the forced language that was part of even Woolrich's best work.

THE BAD NEWS FIRST: You're going to want to read Dynamite Road and Shotgun Alley before you read this one. That's bad news because you'll have to find them first. That's good news because you'll enjoy reading them, and be fully familiar with the characters and the careful painting that Klavan does to set things up. The other bad news is that after you get about halfway through, you'll lose sleep until you finish it. And then be hungry for more.

THE GOOD NEWS: This is a terrific mystery, with a complex interweaving of plot, idea, and shoeleather that follows Weiss, Bishop and....the narrator... around a complex plot involving love, fights, and the discovery of reality. The twists in the plot will surprise you, and the resolution delight you. And you wanted that, right?

Buy the other two first, and read them. Then buy this. Read it. Feel oddly accomplished. Look for more by Klavan: he knows when to push a plot into interesting shapes.

One bad chapter does not mean a bad book. Klavan had to give his best character his due and circumstances limited what could be done. That said, this book is terrific. Three protagonists are weaved into a good story. But it's the characters that keep my interest. Klavan is excellent as a writer and story teller.

The Weiss/Bishop novels make a great trilogy & I recommend starting with Dynamite Road, the first one. Klavan is a born raconteur and is also funny and insightful. You won't forget Weiss & Bishop, that's for sure. Or the evil Shadowman either. Lots of summer reading fun. I'm on Werewolf Cop now.
VAZGINO
Great conclusion to the series of stories. Very fun, quick read, never slow or boring. I think this book has more graphic details of sex than the other books.
Ichalote
exciting and it held my interest throughout

This book Provides an Excellent End To An Overwhelming Great Series. Cannot Wait To Read Future Books From Andrew Klavan

HIghly Recommend Reading The Whole Weiss Bishop Series but This Book Can Be Enjoyed Solo
I only read the first five chapters, so this is not a full review of the book. The writing and plot seem good enough but the reader will find foul language and explicit sex within the first 27 pages. Just a bit surprised to get this in a book endorsed by Laura Ingraham.
