Well, that's the tradition Lyndon Stacey has chosen to adopt for this book. Her hero is beaten up, bitten by a horse, thrown from his motorbike at least twice, almost killed in a fire, trampled by donkeys, etc. If that isn't enough to turn you off, Stacey would have you believe that this artist-animal behaviorist can "converse" mentally with horses, dogs, you name it-which comes in handy when he has to catch a "wild" stallion with his hand tied and blind-folded.

The blindfold was a major hindrance. Though severely handicapped by the blindfold and fearing certain death, he has no choice but to comply. Without it, it felt uncomfortably like a game of Russian roulette. Gideon Blake, artist and animal behaviourist, is used to dealing with distressed and unpredictable animals. But one cold February night he is faced with the challenge of his life. Bruised and bewildered by the events of that fateful night, Gideon ignores his abductors' threats to stay silent and resolves to find out who was behind this sadistic and seemingly irrational act.

I'd swear this book was written by Dick Francis. Lyndon Stacey lives in a quiet village in the Blackmore Vale in Dorset, with three assorted dogs and a cat, and her books are set in the surrounding counties. Although she started writing fiction as a very young child, she worked in many and varied jobs after leaving school, alongside which she gained a very good reputation as an animal portrait artist. Writing was always her first love, however, a Lyndon Stacey lives in a quiet village in the Blackmore Vale in Dorset, with three assorted dogs and a cat, and her books are set in the surrounding counties.

very interesting characters and a plot involving a protagonist who is an animal behaviourist and artist. Unusual crime story and a good read.

Brilliant !

You'll never guess the ending of this fast paced 'horse' mystery. Gideon Blake is an 'animal behaviorist'and artist, who through no fault of his own, is caught up in a number of troubles. The story opens when Gideon is kidnapped and blindfolded, and told to catch a horse. While blindfolded(!) he still manages to help calm and catch the raging stallion. The unravelling of this mystery, in addition to the many subplots and twists, will keep you guessing and breathless until the end.

Excellent book and service !

This was a good read, especially for animal lovers and trainers. Reading the blurb, I thought it would be unrealistic, but it was believable. The story has two main plots (mysteries) and one subplot, plus the animal interactions, so there is much going on to hold your attention. I already put three more of Stacey's books on hold at the library.

The cover of the hardback says, "In the bestselling tradition of Dick Francis." Anyone familiar with Francis will recall that toward the end of his career, he began inflicting a lot of bodily harm on his heroes. Well, that's the tradition Lyndon Stacey has chosen to adopt for this book. Her hero is beaten up, bitten by a horse, thrown from his motorbike at least twice, almost killed in a fire, trampled by donkeys, etc.

If that isn't enough to turn you off, Stacey would have you believe that this artist-animal behaviorist can "converse" mentally with horses, dogs, you name it--which comes in handy when he has to catch a "wild" stallion with his hand tied and blind-folded.

THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR THE REALISTIC, WEAK-HEARTED NOR FOR THOSE WHO LIKE WELL ROUNDED CHARACTERS. It ain't sexy nor romantic either.

Very good read. He does come the closest to Dick Francis that I have found. I enjoy that he writes his story with animals definitely involved. This story will keep you reading to the very end - just like his other books.
