The stakes of the game become clear when a tin can is tossed into the house with rules scrawled on it. Rules that only a madman-or worse-could have written. Rules that make no sense yet must be followed.

One game. Seven players. Three rules. Game ends at dawn.

House is a supernatural thriller about seven people who end up in a house together. Shortly after arriving, odd things start happening and getting progressively worse. It culminates when a tin can is thrown into the house with three rules for the game.

1. God came to my house and I killed him
2. I will kill anyone who does to my house and I killed God
3. Give me one dead body, and I might let rule two slide

Now everyone in the house has to decide who to kill if anyone, and who is behind the tin can.

I'm sorry that my last few reviews have been negative ones, but this is another one I didn't love. I really wanted to read a good supernatural horror - I LOVE scary movies, especially when they have to do with demons/hauntings/possession, etc. Based on the description of this book, I thought I'd found a winner. I did not. I've heard great things about Ted Dekker, and this was my first book by him, and it was a let down. After I finished reading the book and composing my thoughts, I read a few reviews and it sounds like this was not his normal caliber of work, so I'm still open to giving him another chance.

To me, the book felt really convoluted. There were so many perspective jumps that it was hard to keep track of who was in which room of the house, and where each room led. You'd think that those things wouldn't matter, but so much of the book was spent talking about those things, that it kind of did. Also, on a more pedantic note, it bothered me that of the three "rules" only one could even sort of be interpreted as a rule. The other two were just statements!

For a book that is supposed to be a supernatural horror, I didn't feel scared, tense, or on edge at all. The characters fell flat to me and had little to no personality, and the personality they did have was crappy, so I wasn't really rooting for them to get out alive anyway. I was shocked at how many parts of the book felt boring.

Lastly, this book evolved into a completely different story than how it started. It was a blatant good vs. evil, god vs. the devil sort of story, with angels and the repenting your sins...the whole nine yards. I wasn't aware going in that the authors were writers of Christian books, and I want to be VERY clear that I have nothing at all against that, and that I only bring it up because had I known that going in, I could have guessed the ending and would have skipped this book all together. It never got preachy, which I appreciate, but the moral of the story was very clear.

Overall, this one just didn't do it for me.

This book is way too much cheap thrown-together just for halloween horror movie. Actually 97% or so. It just goes on and on and on-- rotten wormy food, running in an endless dark maze chased by horrors, dead people that don't stay dead. The whole thing, A copycat thing thrown together for a quick buck. I feel cheated not just of my time and money but of the respect I had for the author.

The "Christian" part is about three pages at the end. And to be honest, I felt it was a distorted version of salvation. I've liked the other Peretti books I read. This one is a cheat. I'm sorry I wasted my time and money on it. It left such a bad taste I probably won't even try to read any other Perettis, since now I can't be sure just what I'll be getting.

If you're older than 15, spare yourself.

I had this book recommended to me by my sister. I gave it a try. I did finish it but that was a task in itself. I wasn't familiar with the authors so I didn't know that it would be a good versus evil, God versus evil book. It just didn't keep my attention. I was to the point of not caring about any of the characters. They could have all died and just shortened the book and put me out of my misery. I did pay for it so I was determined to finish it. I don't recommend this book unless you are desperate for something to read

This is my first Peretti book I have read and I have enjoyed it so far. I am about two chapters from finishing. I enjoyed the plot but got lost sometimes by the number of rooms. ( You will understand if you read it) The only complaint I have is the author needs to do a little research on guns. One of the characters (a police officer) "pulled out his revolvers and checked the clips." He has confused revolvers with semi-automatic pistols. This is just a pet peeve of mine and most readers would have probably just read through it and moved on. Overall I have enjoyed the book.

The way the book ends really brings into perspective the every day life of sin in everyone. The wages of sin is death... but God already paid that price for us. The book is Insanely creepy and scary but if you open your mind to the meanings behind the words and get the whole point of the book, it can change your life. This is what I've always imagined earth would be like if we could see angels and demons walking amongst us... a constant battle around every corner that stems from the ugliness of every person's heart. But God won the battle and it's up to us to look into the light and believe. "The light always shines in the darkness!" Great read, if you're a Christian you'll get the meaning behind the horror.

One of those books you can’t put down. I got lost in this book. I have read this book over and over so many times. Such a great read!

I was terribly disappointed in this book. I love Frank Peretti's previous books but this had none of the character development of "This Present Darkness", "The Prophet", "The Oath", or others. The paragraphs and sentences were short, clipped, and written in the style of Robert B. Parker - perhaps this is the influence of Ted Dekker, since I've never read any of his other books. I was never drawn into the plot (what plot??) and found the constantly changing house to be poorly developed and mostly just confusing. The conflict between good and evil was also not developed during the first 90% of the book, it was simply a mad chase through a chaotic environment. Some characters, most notably the police officer, were such caricatures as to be almost laughable. I wish I could get my 6 bucks and 8 hours back!
This was terrible. The first two thirds of the book was pretty good, but the last Third ruined it. I haven't read many books that I finished that i wish I'd given up on. This was one of them. The movie is decent though. It's certainly a lot better than it's source material.
