Hit List - G+ Lawrence Block - 2nd in series Keller seems the archetypal contemporary urban man. He lives a mostly solitary and quotidian existence on Manhattan's East Side. He eats out; he ruminates in Seinfeldian fashion about how to "clean his plate" in a restaurant that trumpets a bottomless coffee cup: every time he empties his cup, a waitress refills it. He works on his stamp collection and goes to jury duty when summoned

Keller is a regular guy, a solid citizen. Call him for jury duty and he serves without complaint. He goes to the movies, watches the tube, browses the art galleries, and works diligently on his stamp collection. But every now and then a call from the breezily efficient Dot sends him off to kill a total stranger. He takes a plane, rents a car, finds a hotel room, and gets back before the body is cold.

He's a real pro, cool and dispassionate and very good at what he does. Until one day when Dot breaks her own rule and books him for a hit in New York, his home base. She sends him to an art gallery opening, and the girl he gets lucky with steers him to an astrologer. He's a Gemini, his moon's in Taurus . . . and he's got a murderer's thumb.

Then the jobs start to go wrong. Targets die before he can draw a bead on them. The realization is slow in coming, but there's no getting around it: Somebody out there is trying to hit the hit man. Keller, God help him, has found his way on to somebody else's hit list.

Darker than Keller's conscience, and as riveting, surprising, and wickedly funny as his sensational New York Times bestselling debut, Hit Man, Lawrence Block's Hit List only serves to confirm the Wall Street Journal's estimation of the multiple-award-winning author as "one of the very best writers now working the beat."

I think I've read all of Block's Matthew Scudder novels. Then I came across his John Keller series. OMG, how I love these. I like to read books in order and I just finished Hit List, which is the second in the series. I ordered the next one and can't wait to begin reading it. The characters are very interesting. There's Keller, and his "handler", who are both hysterically funny without realizing it. Any scene with the two of them is impossible to put the book aside Talk about a great beach read for the summer!

I may feel a little guilty for saying this, but I LOVE this series! It's so unique, so entertaining, and so well done. If you haven't tried Block's Keller series, you're missing out (as I was until I stumbled across Book 4 last month).

This is a wonderful series! Might be a little dark for some readers, but I don't usually like dark and I love it. If you haven't read any of these Keller books, I suggest you check them out. If you find it a little for your taste, I suggest you try the Bernie Rhodenbarr series. I've found both leading men clever and interesting. It's very easy to become engrossed in the stories.

I'll confess: I really like Lawrence Block's work. I get his newsletter. I buy his books. But Hit List? Keller, the pro killer engages in the kinds of behaviors that you just find a little to hard to believe. The cynical hit man going to an astologer? And altering his behavior because of what she says? I don't think so. Then there's the matter of the back and forth between Keller and his "agent," Dot. BORING! Filler? Who knows? Seems like Block had a good idea in having a hit man set up as a target. Seems like he had a bad idea in having a short story set up as a novel.

great series. always save these and re-read them.

This book is a bit weird. I wanted to give up so many times - because it was BORING - but bravely soldiered on - because INTERESING bits and pieces kept on popping up.
Still, it's more a miss than a hit, and endless conversations between Dot and Keller reminded me of Waiting for Godot. Was there another point to their dialogue, except to drive everyone crazy? I don't know.
Can't say I recomend it fully, can't say I don't recomend if fully. Hence 3 stars.

Not a typical Keller plot.
Interesting to see him on the receiving end.
The end was a bit contrived but it was a lot
of fun overall.
I love Lawrence Block stories. Always full of suspense and intrigue. Keller is a fascinating hit-man/stamp collector.
