All of them have motives but none of them are charged. The ending is a surprise.

He dedicated Gently North West to his mother, Isabella Hunter, nee Andrews, who was from Culsalmond in Aberdeenshire. In his own words she ‘contrived to possess her son with an indelible prejudice for the land of heroes and poets. Rest her well where she lies and greetings to my unknown Scottish cousins.

There's blood in the heather and a murderer on the loose when Gently pays a quite visit to the Highlands of Scotland.

Had Brenda Merryn not been such a stong-willed woman and had she not been so much in love with George Gently, driving all the way to Scotland for a holiday with Gently's sister and brother-in-law might have been a bit of a challenge. Spying on a heavily armed private army of nationalists, being held at gunpoint on the hillside, being held prisoner in a filthy outhouse and becoming involved in a murder would be unthinkable.

For Gently, it's all in a day's work and his holiday is put on hold while he stalks a murderer in the mountains, with Brenda by his side.

I am a sight reader and don't do well with odd spelling of words to suggest an accent. This greatly slows down reading speed. My comprehension was reduced by perhaps 30% by the use of Scottish words such as "brae", "shankin", "wrack", "hizzies"; "wuddiest", and a 1000 more that my spell checker won't let me type. A Scottish-to English glossary should have been included at the end to the book.

As a Gently fan, I enjoyed the story insofar as I could follow it. I do not recommend for readers who are not familiar with the Scottish words and dialect.

I found the extensive geographic discourse and Scottish dialect a bit overbearing and distracting to the plot. I do love Gently but this was disappointing to me but it all can't be 5 stars
Nagor
The book is old so not very exciting. I read it for my book club.
