Major Harry Maxim has a slight problem on his hands. The Seventeenth Armoured Brigade, a unit of the Jordanian army, has rebelled, and Britain's latest tank, on loan to the Jordanian army for assessment, seems to be missing.
The procedurals all the way through seem to be excellent (I've never been within an ass's roar of either the War Office in Whitehall nor the Jordanian desert), quite a number of explosions take place, most of the chaps have stiff upper lips, and the body count does not seem excessively high. Lyall's detailing is excellent, his characterisation is convincing, the plot has more twists than an old phone cord. And does old Harry bring home the tank? Well, you'll have to read the book to find that out...
Ok, it's perhaps a bit dated - it was first published in 1988 - but that adds something of a vintage patina.
This was the first Gavin Lyall book I read. I've read most of the others available as ebooks, and I am waiting impatiently for Bloomsbury to publish the rest.

Gavin Lyall wrote four stories dealing with Major Harry Maxim, this is the last of the four, with Maxim rescuing a tank undergoing trials in an breaking apart Middle Eastern nation. The character is fully developed by this point in the series; the depressing part is that you know there's no book five to see where he goes next.

I seldom read "war" novels, but I read this one. While I don't have a broad base for comparison I can nevertheless state without hesitation that this is the best one of its kind that I have come across. On the one hand there is a fast-moving action story; on the other a quiet love story from the perspective of the woman who knows her lover is in deep trouble, but cannot reach out to help. The writing is taut and intense in both sectors of the story. Highly recommended.

Dated in copyright time which you might notice by the lack of technology. But a good read that tells a thriller story with a hero trying to hide and (or!) escape with a weapon. Told against the ubiquitous background of Middle East politics which are well summarized but do not intrude on the main plot. Also featured are British ministries, told in the manner of the "Yes Minister" tv series which provide some sad humor to the hero's efforts to do the right thing.

Gavin Lyall is a very good writer, and this is one of his best books. It moves right along, and teaches you a lot about tanks, and leadership.
