I've been a fan of Jack Higgins ever since I read "The Eagle Has Landed". The book transported me to another time and place and thoroughly engaged me. It's a great summer book. Other World War II books such as "Night of the Fox" and "Cold Harbor" were equally engaging, and I absolutely loved "Pay The Devil", so I had great hopes for this book. I'm not a fan of most of his Sean Dillon series books, but I thought that since this one dealt with issues from World War II that it might be a good read. I was mistaken.

If you've read any Higgins, you know that much of what he has produced is formua writing, but his genius is in making formula writing new and fresh and engaging every time, so much so that you'll want to pick the book up again and again even though you know where it's going and may not like the ending. While this book too is formula, it is not fresh and it's not engaging. I'm ashamed to say that I actually put the book down about 2/3 of the way through - something I very, very rarely do. I suppose that if you like some of his later books, you might find it a good read, but for me, it was not money well spent.

I have been a fan of jack Higgins for years. As usual I throughly enjoyed this, his first novel. It contains warfare, romance, mystery. The only drawback for me was that it seemed a little jerky in the sequencing. Still a good story by a great storyteller.
LONUDOG
Lorax returns to a WWII commando site and finds out that everyone knows something that he doesn’t know. That puts him behind the locals in a race to find a killer. A good story of trust and friendship with a love chaser.
Rocky Basilisk
I guess that you can't argue with success. This book is predictable in that it adheres to the Jack Higgins formula. It holds some interest but you can almost guess at what will happen next.........according to the formula.
Kabei
Chosen because it told the story of what followed the war after Lomax did his part to win for our side. Good characterization, believable story. Shows us "you can't go back again!
Goldenfang
Easy to follow ending not expected. Another war book but on a different piece of land. A reminder that the war touched many good people
Folsa
It is always a good experience to read a Higgins book and this is no exception. It keeps you interested until the end...it makes you think what the outcome of the story would be.
Jack Higgins is my favorite author and THE DARK SIDE OF THE ISLAND doesn't disappoint!
