The only place where the motif had been ignored was the feet. Stewart Fromes’ ten stiff naked toes wore no shoes. Napoleon Solo stepped back, completely baffled. This was like some double blasphemy of the dead.

The President of the United States sent his very Special Private Investigator, Ed Noon, to Rome to pick up an innocuous package. But the enigma of that package and what it held hurled the redoubtable Noon into a fantastic set-piece of espionage, mayhem and sudden death. Where else but the Eternal City could he have met a pistol-packing giant like Kate Arizona, a tough policeman like Captain Santini, and the dread terrorist group known as the Arcangeli?

A fairly short Ed Noon novel at 122 pages. First published in 1977, this is one of the later efforts in this series about a hardboiled private eye who eventually morphed into spy fiction.

I enjoyed it for its placement of Noon in Rome and for its action-packed sequences. Properly humorous, the story never really went anywhere plot wise although it was fun to read. It is filled with secret arrests, shootouts, bombs, mysterious murders, kidnapping, interrogation, and battles with Amazons.
I read them all. This one was good - not the best but still good. Overall, I enjoyed the entire series even though there were some things left unresolved (like: Did Ed Noon ever get married?). Michael Avallone always told a good tale with this series. I liked the way Ed Noon stated the clues, did his investigations, made conclusions, then moved on them. Often over the top, always a wise-guy, Ed Noon was the classic old-time private detective and the series makes for good reading.
The "Ed Noon" series by Michael Avalonne deserves to be better known than it is ;a long running series ,it was a PI saga with a difference .Noon may well have been a gumshoe in the time honoured tradition but he was unique in one respect -he had only one client ,none other than the President of the United States.

This 1977 novel is one written towards the tail end of the series and is set in Rome. When we first meet Noon in the book he is under arrest and being grilled by an Italian policeman ,one Captain Michele Santini.Santini accuses him -on the scantiest of evidence -of being a murderer ,one who has killed an innocent tourist as well as having planted bombs at major Roman tourist sites .Noon is soon released and suspects -rightly -that his detention was due to a personal ,but unknown agenda of Santini.

Noon had been sent to Rome to pick up some vital documents from a man named Flood ,based at the US Embassy in Rome .He agrees to meet Flood at the Spanish Steps but Flood is killed -mown down along with several innocent bystanders by a machine gun wielding Amazon named Kate Arizona ,who is acting in collusion with Santini and wishes to get her hands on the documents in question.Foiled in the attempt ,she takes Noon captive and sets out to extract from him the location of the documents .

The scene is set for an explosive -literally-climax at the Colosseum .

This is slick and formulaic pulp fiction written with pace and brio .Arizona is a genuinely chilling villain and Noon an engaging and resourceful hero ,while the city of Rome in all its fading glory emerges as a character in its own right

Its no masterpiece but the book has a lot going for it-vigour ,direct and punchy prose and an uinflagging pace that sustains interst all the way to a gripping ending

A good evenings read for lovers of vintage pulp writing
