2 Ah, said the Inspector. Coburn, let go. He’ll talk no. .Villa looked about with despairing eyes. Everywhere he met grim faces. He nodded almost wearily. continued Thumm with a wink at the officer. Coburn pushed the chair against the backs of the man’s legs, and he sat down heavily. The others made a ring about the chair, watchful and unsmiling. So you were the nineteenth man in the bus, Joe, began Thumm in an easy tone. You gave Barbey here a five-spot to let you join the party, hey? Why? What was the game?.

Drury Lane is a fictional detective created by Ellery Queen in the 1930s under the byline of Barnaby Ross. He is a retired Shakespearian actor who lives in a lavish castle on the Hudson River. His backstory involves leaving the theatre because he lost his sense of hearing, and the novels occasionally mention his lip-reading. He appeared in four mystery novels: The Tragedy of X, The Tragedy of Y, The Tragedy of Z, and Drury Lane's Last Case. These books were later reissued under the Ellery Queen byline.

I think Ellery Queen (Barnaby Ross) thought DRURY LANE'S LAST CASE would go down in detective story history .

I think Ellery Queen (Barnaby Ross) thought DRURY LANE'S LAST CASE would go down in detective story history as one of the classic mysteries of all time. That didn't quite happen, even though the ending is quite surprising. Ellery Queen had a background in advertising, and lots of reasons to suppose DRURY LANE'S LAST CASE was a great ad for his brand. I can't quite figure out why things didn't happen that way. Ellery Queen had a lot of success, and the Barnaby Ross pen-name produced some wonderful books, but somehow they ended up being underestimated. With the help of the legendary Shakespearean actor Drury Lane, Thumm must locate the missing manuscript and solve an impossible murder-before the curtain comes down forever. Thriller & Crime Private Investigators
