The woman, Elizabeth Cruikshank, has just attempted suicide. As the two begin to explore her history, David takes an uncommon interest in her case, a curiosity driven by a terrible loss in his own life.

For psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Dr. David McBride, death exerts an unusual draw. Despite his profession, he has never come to terms with the violent accident that took his brother’s life, a trauma that has shaped his personality and subsequent choice of career. But when a failed suicide, Elizabeth Cruikshank, comes into his care, he finds the deepest reaches of his suppressed history being reactivated. Elizabeth is mysteriously reticent about her own past and it is not until David recalls a painting by the Italian artist Caravaggio that she finally yields her story. As she recounts the chance encounter which took her to Rome, and her tragic tale of passion and betrayal, David begins to find a strange and disturbing reflection of his own loss in the haunted “other side” of this elusive woman. Through one long night’s dialogue they journey together into a past which brings painful new insight and uncertain resolution to each of them. The Other Side of You is a powerful meditation on art, and on love in all its manifestations. In distinctive, graceful prose, Salley Vickers explores the ways both love and art can penetrate the complexities of the human heart, to invade and change our being, and the possibilities of regeneration through another’s vision and understanding.

I found this book absorbing and very interesting. I have never before come across an author who seems able to fully understand and communicate the complicated forces which drive our decisions in life. Elizabeth is in torment because she allowed her one true love and soul mate to escape a life of love and fulfillment lived only with her. The reason for her laxity seems to be an overwhelming sense of duty towards her family. On her lover's death she unsuccessfully tries to commit suicide. The book is about the confidences she tells to her analyst. He has also lost someone close to him in the past and, through her torment, he finds how his guilt may hide a truth which prevents peace and redemption for himself. Sally Vickers has developed her characters to such an extent that we feel we know both the admitted and hidden reasons for their inner lives and are prompted to examine our own understanding of reality. She successfully uses Caravaggio's art works as a device for self examination. Elizabeth's lover showed these art works to her and explained how they could be regarded in alternative ways. We are invited to do the same. Selected works of Caravaggio are described in detail together with some stories that relate to them. This encourages the reader to thoughtfully reassess what seems to be the obvious. My review sounds as if this book could be heavy work but it is written with such sympathy and understanding that we are drawn towards all the main characters and can therefore share the enlightened view of guilt, remorse, social responsibility and love. I can recommend this as an extraordinary love story as well as a piece of wonderful literature.

I won't talk about the story, as others have done this more than adequately. I suggest you read it. A well written novel, with superbly layered characters that it's possible to know and like; in some cases, dislike. The novel speaks of human frailty, hopes, sadness and betrayal. A lovely tempo makes the book difficult to release. I hope you enjoy meeting the characters in this book, and can enjoy their better times and weather their losses and sadness. A novel that makes one think and consider.

Depth....plot that sweeps you away and onward....and inward....this book is a gem. On the surface a marvelously engrossing story of a therapist and his deep engagement with his patients, and brittle non-engagement with his wife, this gorgeously, sensuously written novel, dives into a story of passion, great, true love... set against the brilliant, burning work of Caravaggio.
A page turner! You won't put it down!

This is beautifully written although somewhat talky book. I was drawn in right away and loved the subtle yet profound observations about human nature. It's a story that stays with you and makes you look longingly over missed chances in your own life. It carries a haunting feeling of sadness, yet it is mixed with joy, like a piece of music by Tchaikovsky.

Having read and enjoyed Mr Golightly's Holiday and Miss Garnet's Angel by this author, I knew I would enjoy this book. Truth be told I loved every page and insight that it provided. I have paged backwards & fore wards many times just to absorb the truisms. The writing style is at times convoluted, but it simply slowed down my reading pace enabling a better grasp of the dialogue. A wonderful book for sensitive souls and others....

Simply this book is beautifully written. I could not put it down. The characters both frustrated and touched but that is because that is how life is.
