The Graham Formula book. Patrick McIntyre's A Scandal Bigger Than Jimmy Swaggart. How the narrow path to salvation has become a four-lane highway

The Graham Formula book. A Scandal Bigger Than Jimmy Swaggart. How the narrow path to salvation has become a four-lane highway. If you're a pastor or evangelist, you probably know the truth: About 90% of seekers that come forward in altar calls don't join a church. Yet, many pastors and evangelists continue to report a 100% salvation rate for all who come to the altar.

The Benjamin Graham formula is a formula proposed by investor and professor of Columbia University, Benjamin Graham, often referred to as the "father of value investing". Published in his book, The Intelligent Investor, Graham devised the formula for lay investors to help them model growth formulas in vogue at the time of the formula's publication.

Why? Patrick McIntyre's fascinating new book The Graham Formula: Why Most Decisions for Christ are Ineffective, exposes current methods of evangelism that produce a staggering number of stillborn - instead of born again - Christians. In his book, McIntyre examines why Billy Graham, the most famous evangelist developed a three-part formula, producing according to Graham, a 25% born-again rate among those who made decisions for Christ at his crusades. But most evangelists and pastors use only one-third of Graham's formula for success, turning it into a recipe for disaster. By giving seekers a small but deadly injection of hope, and then telling them they're saved, real salvation is even farther off. And the epidemic is church-wide. Charles E. Hackett, national director of the Assemblies of God home missions said, "we realize approximately 95 out of every hundred will not become integrated into the church." Church Growth magazine reported a 6% retention rate for 18,000 decisions. In 1995, a leading U.S. denomination reported 384,057 decisions. Only 6% were retained. Peter Wagner admitted only 3% to 16% of those who make a decision at crusades end up responsible members of a church. What started out as a temporary, questionable, timesaving device because of a shortage of counselors at Billy Graham crusades is now THE normal practice in thousands of churches across America. If you want to give an altar call that assured genuine results, identify the two evidences of salvation, and help nominal Christians understand their true condition, a prerequisite of revival, read The Graham Formula.

I really enjoyed this book. I found the history and development of the "sinner's prayer" or "salvation prayer" very informative. McIntyre does not attempt to demonize anyone, though he is strongly criticizes the methods of Billy Sunday. He shows how many practices were beneficial, like Finney's "mourners bench", but goes on to describe how these practices led to Billy Sunday's mass conversions. Billy at first had people sign a card and would have people do follow up. Later he discarded this practice as awkward and unreasonable and would ask people to shake his hand as a sign of their decision to follow Christ. This led to huge numbers of people making decisions, but also led to huge crowds of unconverted "Christians".

He goes on to show how Billy Graham tried to combat this a program of strong preaching, alter calls followed immediately by counselling, and follow up by various churches after the meetings were over. These steps are what McIntyre calls the Graham Formula, and apparently this was Grahams approach to try and curb the huge numbers of false converts coming into the church through "easy believism".

The appendix shows both Calvinism and Arminianism in positive lights, and one is left wondering where the author stands on these issues.

Good book.

He has a lot of good information. But I take one off because of his views on baptismal regeneration. This is just my opinion.

This book will answer your question of how did the church become so much like the world?

My husband was a professing Christian for 28 years. He wanted nothing more out of his relationship with Jesus than the "get out of hell" free card. He wanted to go to heaven but he certainly didn't care if God was going to be there or not. Then one day, GOD saved him!! We had no idea that his testimony of asking Jesus into his heart was not actually saving grace (in his case). He always doubted his salvation but would be reminded again and again that he made that profession of faith and once saved always saved! The problem was... he was never really saved from saying a prayer and it was evident in his life. (We do believe in truly saved person can never be lost again. John 6:37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.)

This book explains the history of where this "alter call salvation" started and the results of that mind set today. It is very eye opening, especially if you have lived through it. If you have doubted your salvation, have no real love for Jesus or His people and are just going through the motions, use this grace God is giving you by not leaving you comfortable in your doubt. Read this book and see if this is how you "got saved".

This is not something modern America church is going to want to be enlightened with. This will expose truth that will separate sheep from goats. It will challenge your theology, your worship and your prayer life. But it will give you truth that you knew in your spirit and the Truth will set you free!

The author presents a good history of the way people have been saved since the time of the Protestant Reformation, though I think it could have had more information in this area. The author did provide enough information to accomplish his goal of showing that saying a prayer for salvation was never done until Billy Sunday, and only later by Billy Graham because the crowds were so large. He shows that saying a prayer was actually not done on purpose by previous evangelists because it would give the person a false sense of his/her true condition; that historically, only a changed life was evidence of having been saved. As a result there are many false converts today.
Patrick McIntyre does a great job documenting the history of how the false gospel was intoduced here in America and why it continues to grow. I recommend this book for every Christian. It will help you to share the Full Gospel and how to communicate to those who are still lost, but are blind becuase they were place on the wrong path or have no desire for truth. Read it and go out and share the Gospel.
