Whatever
My son (and I!) really enjoy the Strega Nona series. I think this one is my favorite. When friendly, wise-woman Strega Nona (grandma witch) gently refuses to teach bumbling Big Anthony how to do magic, he comes up with a not-so-clever plot to trick Strega Nona into instructing him. My son enjoys Anthony's antics ("he never listens!") but also that you can't pull one over on Strega Nona.

Our son LOVES the Strega Nona books, he begs for them each night - which is fantastic. Anything to encourage him to encourage us to read to him, and to encourage him to read himself - is straight from heaven in my book. Add in the interesting bits of Italian language which lead to discussions about English words that are "like" or similar to the Italian ones, and it's practically a cultural revelation. Tomie dePaola scores with this fantastic series.

I didn't know the Strego Nona series was being read as part of the early grade school cirriculum when I purchased them for my 3 year old. When I found out, I was concerned that the book would be too complex to be enjoyed by a toddler. My daughter unexpectedly fell in love with the characters. The illustrations are "old worldly" and adorable. She giggles when Big Anthony is naughty and doesn't listen to the baker and Strega Nona (his employers at different times). My daughter always says Big Anthony needs a time out so he will listen. I'm not sure if she understands that the heroes in this book and the original are intentionally smart independent women, but I'm glad to have her exposed to that concept. Greatly entertaining with subtle morality. Highly recommended!

My 2nd grade students love this book! I read the original Strega Nona to them aloud in class, and ever since, they love any book in this series. They love the characters Strega Nona and Big Anthony. They laugh at Big Anthony's antics, and they love Tomie dePaola's art and writing style. Any time I add a Strega Nona or Big Anthony book to our class library, they race to read it!

This is a great entry in the Strega Nona series by dePaula. There is drama, conflict, danger, comedy and a happy ending, as Strega Nona saves the day, again! The entire series presents a compelling narrative of life in small town Italy of a few years ago, but evokes a picture of modern Italians as well. I am buying the series for my niece but these books are also suitable for an adult who wants to relieve the memories of a childhood with an Italian mother, grandmother or aunt. And they are perfect for passing down to the next generation.

I bought the original Strega Nona book for our then-five-year-old daughter at Christmas, and she was entranced by the story. I bought this Magic Lessons book for her 6th birthday and we both love it just as much. I love that the stories each teach a simple, important lesson with just a touch of magic and mysticism. At 6 years old the writing is too advanced for her to read on her own, but hat means they will last that much longer. We will buy more in this series.

The art, story, and history in these books are amazing. The kids love all the Strega Nona books and I enjoy reading them.
I think the Strega Nona series is great, and want to have the whole collection. This book was purchased and it seemed in decent condition. The inside binding was a bit loose as you can see the threading that holds the pages together. This was previously from a library, which I don't recall seeing that on the description, but that's okay.
