The surprise in this story is that I finished it. The plot is entirely predictable, which isn't particularly a bad thing. It is the first book I've read from Stuart Woods and I will read more as I am encouraged to see in the reviews that his other efforts are much better. The writing is good, the characters well enough developed, but the only twists are unrealistic, or just plain irritatingly dumb moves, that are seemingly used to prolong the length of the book.

This time however, he is being released to an assistant Attorney General. Once an agent himself, he had been incarcerated for killing his former partner and stealing money. His task is to go undercover in a small mountain town to see what is going on. There seems to be something going on with the local large Church. As Jesse infiltrates the clan of one Gene Cold water and his cronies, he finds danger and deception on a much larger scale. Can he get the goods on this organization to gain his freedom or will they find him out and kill yet another agent. Will he ever see his young daughter again?

The plot is interesting, but the development and conclusion of it is hardly realistic, more like low end action movies, and in my opinion - unworthy of the author. The super-hero is more like a cartoon than a human being; on other hand, his personal choices are very strange ones.
What was that about him getting married to a first woman he happened to meet after being released from the prison, especially under such dangerous conditions? I kept expecting that new wife of his to turn out a setup form the cult leader. If I have written this book, I would have had her a traitor, definitely.
Would a sane man bring his child to such a hornet nest? Was it necessary? With all the intricate preparations for the escape, wouldn't a normal parent hold on until it were safe to take the child?
Well, all Woods' books I had read before, I finished in two days maximum. this one took me more than a week and I am greatly disapointed.

I've never read anything by this author that wasn't a five star fire breathing novel jam packed with literary excellence , if you're looking for something to read that make you sleep deprived, and mesmerized this Stuart Woods novel is a must read book.

This was different from the books that Stuart Woods usually writes. I did enjoy it and would like to see more like it. I will be looking forward to reading more of these

This was a very good book. I always like Mr. Woods books. They always tell a good story & he is an excellent writer. His character development is excellent & I always like or dislike the characters a lot. His writing is very smooth & easy even while being a bit nerve wracking in the active parts. One very good thing about his books is that I never have to skip descriptions that get to be too much. It is very seldom that I don't have to do that. I also don't do it in most of Stephen King's books & he is the KING of character development with Mr. Woods being near the top in that very small group of writers.

I do enjoy Stuart Woods' books. They are so readable and engaging. They grab my attention from the beginning and hold it through to the end -- often to the detriment of whatever I was doing before I started reading. Thank you so very much.
I’m a Stuart Woods fan and love his Stone Barrington series. I don’t know how I missed this book when it was originally published but I’m SO GLAD I found it now. Great “can’t-put-it-down” book. Different and somehow better than Woods’ other books. Recommended!
