Differentials: Identification, Restoration & Repair. Jim Allen and Randy Lyman, you couldn't ask for two better guys to talk about gears. Randy's Ring and Pinion is down the street from where I work. He's had a few of my jeeps in his shop, superb work. He is an amazing walking encyclopedia of rear end information. Jim is a superb writer and worked with Randy to capture this information. I got to watch Jim take some of the photos in this book.

Over the years, (many years, like 50!) I have read a lot of articles on differentials in many different publications like Hot Rod, Four Wheeler, Four Wheel Drive, etc., and have watched the guys on Spike's Power Block TV doing differential work. This book is the bible for anyone who has any interest in drive train technical discussions. It's a combo of "Differentials For Dummies," and "Differentials For Experts." It is a very fascinating book, and I learned a lot about the differentials used in the 50's and 60's autos, when I was a lad trying to tear them up. The book dispels rumors and hearsays I've retained from the past, because it tells it like it is, or was. It has answered several questions I hadn't thought to ask. If you have any questions about rear ends, this book will answer 99% of them, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

I didn't know this book was by randy from randy ring and pinion. Describes all the tools you need and how to use them. Great step by step instructions along with helpful tips. My only criticism is that it has side boxes for how to do various things (like using a clamshell bearing remover) and they are positioned kind of randomly and it would be nice if these were indexed so they were easier to find.

I had read a few reviews of this book before my purchase. Knowing the reputation of Randy Lyman I bought the book and was impressed with the extent of coverage. Opinions, parts, practicle information abound inside this well written and researched publication. With this book and a shop manual one could certainly attempt a sucessful repair or restoration of any differential. If the tools and shop space are not available, this book is certainly an expert guide to finding a proper shop and assisting one with knowledge of knowing what you are talking about. Lots of additional information well beyond what I expected. Another "get what you pay for" purchase, besides there simply are few books of this type available.

It's okay if you just want a book with a little bit of information on just about every differential out there but it won't replace a service manual. It's actually a pretty good book to have and anyone that is going to do some work should at least have a copy of it to read through.

This is a great book to add to your shop library. I bought it to help me with rebuilding and going through my early Jeep axles. Tons of valuable info concerning many different model axles, lockers and limited slips. I am glad I bought it.

I bought this book as a beginner over a year ago and had no one to help me learn how to re-gear my TJ. This book is more for the back yard mechanic that has done at least one re-gear and that has a basic idea of the process. I did figure it out by using you tube and the internet and after the first re-gear is done the book made more since to me. I am now on my 15th re-gear for Jeep friends and do not use books but they say there is a number two to this book now and it may be better for complete beginners, I don't know?
