The "most poetic of the English Cathedrals" in the heart of medieval Wells; England's smallest city. This is a brief account of archaeological investigation from 1978-80 under the direction of Dr. Warwick Rodwell. The cover illustration is a 13th-century floor tile, showing a stylized west-front view of a great church, white on a green-glazed background, and found in the excavations in 1978. The Wells Cathedral has a long and complex history. The magnificent architectural legacy has accrued over the last 800 years and does not tell the whole story of the Church at Wells. Before the present cathedral was begun in c. 1180 there was an earlier cathedral of Anglo-Saxon foundation, and before that a minister church. This in turn overlay a yet more ancient mortuary chapel and cemetery, with its origins in the Roman period. No other British cathedral has so far yielded a comparable archaeological sequence.
