by John Horner,Don Lessem
I have read several of John Horners books on paleontology. I, myself, am planning to go into the field of paleontology.
Children (and adults) will learn the process of excavation along with some of the key concepts in paleontology. Jack Horner never talks down to his audience, and his excitement and passion for what he does is contagious. I have read several of John Horners books on paleontology. Horner's books are informative, interesting, knowledgeable, and smooth reading. Although I disagree with the recommended level of reading this web site has given this book, ages 9-12, please!
Digging Up Tyrannosaurus Rex book. Cool story of a Tyrannosaurus rex dig. Used a TON of vocab that matched with 4th grade science book.
Digging Up Tyrannosaurus Rex book. Photographed in full color . It focuses on the discovery of the first complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton ever found. This book would be great to use on a lesson about fossils. I paired this with Grambling's "Can I Have a Tyrannosaurus Rex?" for a lesson on author's prupose.

The curator of paleontology at Montana's Museum of the Rockies describes the discovery of a Tyrannosaurus rex fossil and its excavation, and explains its scientific importance. So far, only ten skeletons that are more than 30% complete have been found; this one (spotted in 1988 by a young woman hiking with her family) was the first to be nearly complete.
Don Lessem, John R. Horner. In the summer of 1990, the first nearly complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton ever found was excavated in the Montana badlands under the supervision of one of the world's leading dinosaur paleontologists, Dr. John Horner. That same year a second, even more complete, skeleton was found in South Dakota. Together these skeletons are yielding surprising new insights into the most famous of the dinosaurs

Although digging up remains of a T. rex in the area is not an uncommon feat, what makes this find unique is the quality of the fossil . rex in the area is not an uncommon feat, what makes this find unique is the quality of the fossil, and the age of the dinosaur in question. Is it really a young T. rex, which lived during the last 2 million years of the Cretaceous period, from about 67 million to 65 million years ago. Or could it be another example of the controversial-and potentially bogus-Nannotyranus (a small genus of the tyrannosaurid family first catalogued in 1946)? With a specimen this complete, perhaps the answers will soon be revealed. VIDEO: Dinosaurs: Known as the king of the tyrant lizards, T-Rex was one of the largest carnivores of all time.
