Michael Llewellyn-Smith. This book tells a rarely told story about one of the greatest human catastrophes of the 20th century - the destruction in 1922 of the Greek Community in Asia Minor by the Ottoman Turks. The story of the destruction of a community which had lived in the West Coast of today's Turkey since before the time of Homer. I say, "rarely told" because it is story that is indeed "rarely told" to anyone who is not Greek or Turkish.

This book describes the political and military developments leading to Greece's takeover and subsequent expulsion from Smyrna and the surrounding region in Asia Minor. It is a an exhaustively researched, rigorous historical book that is well written and a great pleasure to read. It gave me a new understanding of that period of Greece's history and left me with a desire to learn more about the lost world of Greeks and Armenians in Asia Minor.

This is the only book written in English which comprehensively examines the 1919-1922 war between Turkey and Greece. It's in-depth focus on the Greek political situation is without parallel. The world needs a book which focuses on Turkey and the military situation on the ground in Anatolia. Dr. Llewellyn Smith has created a masterpiece for the ages. This book should be a standard for any student of 20th century history. - Ward Kelman - Polatli, Turkey

This book covers a complex time in world history full of events and people unfamiliar to the average American reader. I had to read more general histories of the time place before I could appreciate Smith's book. Having said that, I thought the author did an excellent job of presenting his history in a logical manner.
