Along the Color Line: Explorations in the Black Experience. The prelude to the civil rights revolution of the mid-twentieth century was the dramatic eighteen-month bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama, led by Martin Luther King, Jr. Unknown at the time was the fact that Montgomery had witnessed a two-year boycott by its Negro citizens over a half century before, when the city council enacted a trolley-car segregation bill. Like the bus boycott of 1955-1956, the streetcar boycott of 1900-1902 was part of a larger regional Negro protest against Jim Crow urban transit.
