I am not downgrading the author or his work. I am a big fan and have most of his books. I am not interested in a refund either. I am interested in reading a "NEW" book not a re-titled book. I would say that the publisher should take this into consideration. I had read "Liberation Movements" and again enjoyed the books by this author. I ordered "The Istanbul Variations" thinking that it was new and it turned out to be "Liberation Movements" with a new title. I would say shame on the publishers, not the author.

I just had the same experience with another book by the author Peter Robinson - Inspector Banks. His latest is a re-titled version of Abattoir Blues, now titled "In the Dark Places".

I have seen one of my books re-titled and selling in Europe and I get not one cent of royalties as a result. So, I would say that the authors need to get with publishers who, perhaps, are not being as honest as they should be.
The Istanbul Variations is a well-crafted story line with interesting protagonists. The accuracy of scene descriptions, recalling the cold war conditions makes for an intriguing novel. It’s is a book you cannot put down once you begin reading it. It rivals Gorky Park and other superb Russian novels by Martin Cruz Smith. Goodreads has an excellent review and synopsis.
Would not have purchased "Istanbul Variations" if I had realized it was Steinhauer's "Liberation Movements" under a different title. Don't understand why publishers do this. Anyway, it's a very good book and I highly recommend reading it as part of Steinhauer's four book series following a small group of criminal investigators and 'state security' officers in an unnamed Eastern Block country in the years following World War Two. But watch out for alternately titled version, such as "Vienna Assignments" which is the same book as "36 Yalta Boulevard."
