Every Move You Make book. This was my first David Malouf and I loved it. He drags you into the characters and their environments so quickly that you're left gasping for more when you realise you've come to the end of his story. I loved the length of the stories themselves encompassing so much in much less than a novel. My favourites were; The valley of Lagoons and Every move you make. Jan 17, 2012 Leigh rated it liked it.

David Malouf's short story collection Every Move You Make explores the ties of love in the Australian outback. One of this collection's greatest strengths is the empathy Malouf brings to bear on the portrayal of his characters and the finely tuned precision with which he deconstructs their emotions. Yet there are also moments of cohesion, when people are drawn 'out of their own distance' by the 'stilled enchantment' of music or become so wholly absorbed by nature they melt into a universal.

In "Towards Midnight", one of the shortest stories of Every Move You Make, an unnamed woman . Peripheral observations are at the core of many of the Australian writer David Malouf's stories.

In "Towards Midnight", one of the shortest stories of Every Move You Make, an unnamed woman in an unnamed Tuscan spot makes a nightly ritual of watching a swimmer from her window. In a variation on Chipper's resilience, the eccentric heroine of "Mrs Porter and the Rock" ruminates on the invincibility of that ancient breed the cockroach, and concludes that "when it came to survival, you couldn't beat people. They just went on and o. But not that many do go on.

Also by David Malouf. The Complete Stories. The Conversations at Curlow Creek. The sea has many voices. The voice this man is listening for is the voice of his mother. He lifts his head, turns his face to the chill air that moves in across the gulf, and tastes its sharp salt on his lip. The sea surface bellies and glistens, a lustrous silver-blue – a membrane stretched to a fine transparency where once, for nine changes of the moon, he had hung curled in a dream of pre-existence and was rocked and comforted.

Bookish boys and taciturn men, strong women and wayward sons, fathers and daughters, lovers and husbands, a composer and his muse, a builder-architect and his legacy - here are their stories, whole lives brought vividly into focus and so powerfully rooted in the landscape that you can almost feel the heat and the dust. His canvas is the vast Australian continent from the mysterious, glittering Valley of Lagoons behind the Great Divide in Far North Queensland, to bohemian Balmain and the Centre at Uluru, but always there are enticing glimpses of a world beyond, and the stories are tender, subtle, unsettlingly intimate. A young man going off to war tries to make sense of his place in the world he is leaving; a composer's life plays itself out as a complex domestic cantata; an accident on a hunting trip speaks volumes, which its inarticulate victim never could; and, in the funniest, most surprising story of all, a down-to-earth woman stubbornly tries to keep her feet on the ground at Ayers Rock. Malouf's men and women are together but curiously alone, looking for something they seem to have missed, or missed out on, in life, puzzling over the space they'll leave behind when the waters close over them...This is a heartbreakingly beautiful, richly satisfying collection by a master storyteller, one of the great writers of our time.
