A Biography originally appeared in German as Spinne im eigenen Netz in 1990, published by Elster in Bu¨hl-Moos. This English translation has been updated and also includes information on Dani Karavan’s monument to Benjamin in Portbou. Almost half of Brodersen’s masterfully and elegantly written book is devoted to the period up to 1919, when Benjamin received his doctorate. This is not only because Brodersen is principally concerned with Benjamin’s activities during his youth and years as a student, but also because he provides an extremely detailed examination of the political, social and cultural conditions of the time.
