Exploration and discovery in the Pacific in the 18th century were undertaken most actively by the British and the French. Four Englishmen- John Byron, Samuel Wallis, Philip Carteret, and James Cook -and the Frenchman Louis-Antoine de Bougainville were preeminent. His third voyage (1776–79) included exploration of the North Pacific and the Bering Strait, but he was killed in 1779 in the Hawaiian Islands, which he had discovered earlier in the voyage. Cook’s voyages left little land to be discovered in the Pacific, and his maps and charts were so accurate that many have not been substantially revised.
