From the Preface:In the late Twenties, soon after the appearance of Katherine Mayo's Mother India, an outraged resident of Calcutta published a scathing rejoinder, entitled Uncle Sham. this depressing record of murder, arson, rape, thievery, and other forms of vice and corruption, was carefully and conscientiously documented from contemporary American newspapers. While the era of Calvin Coolidge had many unlovely aspects, not the least of which was Prohibition, the picture presented by the author of Uncle Sham was far from correct, for he had drawn his conclusions entirely from printed sources, at a great distance, without personal observation. It became clear to me that, if Boston were to be included in the Centers of Civilization Series, the volume must deal with the present rather than the past. Thus I attempt a portrait of the city around me in the nineteen sixties.
