I grew up in Upstate New York, where our costumes were typically flammable with a plastic mask held on with a tiny elastic string (that really hurt if it popped and hit you in the face). They also had to be large enough to fit over your snowsuit or snorkel jacket, since snow was never out of the question. The weather also made it easy for adults (cough, cough MOM) to throw on a sheet with holes & collect candy as a "ghost.

Rosa Raisa (30 May 1893 – 28 September 1963) was a Polish-born and Italian-trained Russian-Jewish dramatic operatic soprano who became a naturalized American. She possessed a voice of remarkable power and was the creator of the title role of Puccini's last opera, Turandot, at La Scala, Milan. She was born as Raitza Burchstein, daughter of Herschel and Frieda Leah (Krasnatawsky) Burchstein, in Białystok, in partitioned Poland (then Russian Empire) on 30 May 1893.
