Excerpt from the Preface: Why is biography so popular? Is biography an art? How does a biographer choose a subject? These were three of the questions discussed but of course never fully answered at a symposium about the writing, the publishing, and the influence of biography held at the Library of Congress on November 9 and 10, 1983. A celebration of books, the symposium was sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. More than thirty biographers (listed on p. 68) joined with publishers, editors, librarians, and readers to exchange ideas about the most popular form of nonfiction in the United States.
