Donna Rose has done it again. She and her sidekick, Cyrus, find themselves involved in solving the murder of Police Chief William Donniker.

Donna and Cyrus's involvement with mysteries isn't new, but it's nothing they seek out, either. They simply find themselves in situations where they seem to be the only ones in a position to get to the truth.

In the Chief's case, it's hard to find someone who really likes him. Lots of people have reason to hate him. But murdering a Chief of Police?

Donna and Cyrus have a strong incentive to solve the mystery. Their friend Jake, a contender for Police Chief, has been arrested for the murder.

Donna Rose and the Roots of Evil is a cozy mystery involving a retired school teacher and her dapper neighbor, Cyrus, a retired Navy man.

Cozy mysteries are becoming an immensely popular genre, especially when they become a series. What is a cozy mystery? It's normally a crime that contains very little sex, violence or coarse language. By the end of the story the mystery has a satisfactory conclusion. The protagonist is often a well-educated woman, someone whom you would like to have as a neighbor. The story-line often takes place in a small picturesque town, such as Cedar Harbor, a make-believe town in the state of Washington.

Donna Rose Galbreath is a retired schoolteacher in Cedar Harbor. Her neighbor, Cyrus, is a retired serviceman who is attracted to her. They form a "dump Donniker" committee to try to get the sheriff removed from office. To their surprise, he is honored at a dinner. Someone laces his food with poisonous roots that were taken from the police evidence locker, and the sheriff drops dead. Their friend, Jake, is accused of the crime. Together, they do what they can to clear their friend of these charges.

The story is told in first person, which isn't my favorite style. However, it allows the author to use large words because the main character is an English teacher. The style makes descriptions awkward, so it's hard in envision the setting. The author also uses too many "small talk" phrases in the conversations (Hello, how are you? Just fine, how are you?) which slows down the pace of the entire piece.

The pace is so slow that this was a great book to read just before bed. Half way through a chapter, my lids would begin to sag, and by the time I made it to the end of the chapter, I was sawing Z's and off to sleep for the night.

For a livelier story that has both romance and mystery, I recommend Stars Shine After Dark, in paperback from IUniverse, and now available as a Kindle or Nook.

In Cedar Harbor, Washington retired schoolteacher Donna Galbreath looks for some quiet after she and her neighbor Cyrus Bates captured a killer (see DONNA ROSE AND THE SLUG WAR). She does expect incompetent police chief William Doniker to be replaced by superstar cop Jake Santorini so when the City Council announces an award ceremony for the former, Donna and Cyrus are stunned. An upset somewhat intoxicated by alcohol and prescription drugs Jake comments he wants to kill William and sneezes into the man's food.

At the gala, William abruptly dies. The autopsy reveals he was poisoned by Monkshood previously used by the killer behind bars in the Slug War case, and stolen from the police evidence room. Jake is arrested as he had motive, means, and opportunity. Donna and Cyrus begin to investigate leading to a strange Cincinnati connection between the deceased, Tim the new owner of the Cedar Harbor Post, and Alvin a vagrant gardener, but how the latter two and Mayor Oliver with his "buddy" system tie to the chief's homicide remains unknown and consequently so does the killer while the cop in charge of the investigation continues to focus solely on Jake,.

Although the story line is a bit thin, fans will enjoy Donna Rose's second amateur sleuth due to a strong cast who bring alive the Puget Sound area. The pairing of Donna and Cyrus is terrific as they believe Jake is innocent and should be chief so they seek the "roots of evil" in their community who murdered the chief. This is a fun Washington State cozy.
