Commenting on this book is difficult because it depends on how broad a view one takes. From a reading standpoint, it is somewhat tiresome because it consists of diary entries. In addition, the lack of maps was a serious shortcoming as it left a reader with little knowledge of Australian geography with insufficient anchorage.

From a broader perspective it was of great interest. First, it seems surprising that Australia was not crossed on land until 1873. The climate and terrain are known to be inhospitable, but the hardships endured on this expedition were beyond my imagination. And to think that the leader of this expedition was 60 when it started.

Great historical account of a most phenomenal journey in the face of death. The Australian town of Warburton bears the Colonel's name to this day.

This is a book worth the time to read about early exploration of the Australian interior. Written in a narrative style which kept the subject from becoming to dry. Hardships were unbelievable.

The best way to learn history is to read the journals of the people who made it.
