Relatively Speaking is a play by British playwright Alan Ayckbourn, originally titled Meet My Father, his first major success

Relatively Speaking is a play by British playwright Alan Ayckbourn, originally titled Meet My Father, his first major success. The action of the play takes place during a summer weekend in the bed-sitting room of Ginny's London flat and on the garden patio of Sheila and Philip's home in Buckinghamshire, outside London. Ginny - A young woman with a chequered past. Greg - Ginny's current boyfriend. Philip - Ginny's former employer and ex-lover. Sheila – Philip's wife.

Many American tourists who flock to the annual Ayckbourn offering in London's West End, think of Alan Ayckbourn as Great Britain's Neil Simon. The analogy holds true to the extent that the relationship between Ayckbourn's and Simon's plays illustrates the difference between British and American theater and audiences. Both writers capture the social machinations of middle-class characters in daily situations that are made compelling simply by the addition of clever but conventional plots, dramatic intrigues, twists, and discoveries.

Relatively Speaking by Alan Ayckbourn is a comedy classic so you'd better enjoy it or else. The play dates from 1967 when Ayckbourn was working as a sketch writer for Ronnie Barker. It was his first hit. Notes in the programme testify to the play's excellence. A telegram sent to Ayckbourn by Noel Coward is quoted twice. Congratulations on a beautifully constructed and very, very funny play. Take the Master's kindness with a pinch of salt.
