As much as I enjoy the author and his eloquent writing/ story telling this book was not at all what I expected. The first 2 chapters were about fire (excellent) the rest was a collection of war stories from across the world. I enjoyed the book but recommend it with a word of caution; this is a rather graphic and brutal collection of stories & not for the faint of heart.

This book is actually a collection of short narratives by the author about various experiences he has had;among those the one dealing with his work with forest fire fighters is the most engaging .The other articles are less entertaining and account for the fact I gave this a three star rating ,on its own the narrative about the fire fighters was a four star..F

I've always liked his writing--this did not disappoint. It is several different mini-documentaries about his journalism ventures--from fires to war-torn areas. Excellent (for me) historical information also. Does not disappoint. I look forward to reading the rest of his books..

While this book may not quite stand up to some of Junger's other works (like War, or Perfect Storm) and there is still much to appreciate about Fire, and well-worth the read. The title is somewhat misleading, as others have said. A better title might have been "Fire and Other Essays." This is a collection and each essay/article is written with Junger's style - direct and frank description of the dangers faced by individuals.

Not quite done reading but so far, very interesting read. I was surprised when the story of the Hotshots ended and the author moved on to Kosovo, and Kashmir. Still have about 100pp left but am already a fan of the author of "A Perfect Storm" and the number of documentaries he reported.

Not really a novel, more a collection of Junger's short essays. If you've already read all the mainstays of this author, this book can give you that Junger fix.
If you have wondered why and how forest fires burn and how they are fought, and how men and women die fighting them, Junger gives you the answers.
