The second installment in Christopher Brookmyre’s new crime series, When the Devil Drives is an intensely gripping literary thriller that delves into the darkest reaches of the human psyche. Actress turned private investigator Jasmine Sharp has become accustomed to clients looking for long-lost relatives, so when a woman hires her to find her younger sister Tessa Garrion, Jasmine presumes the case will be relatively straightforward. The assignment takes her back into the world of professional theater, where she is warned off more than once for probing too deeply into the past. Meanwhile, Detective Superintendent and mother-of-two Catherine McLeod is called to the scene of a murder in the Highlands. Following a theatrical outdoor performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream at Cragruthes Castle, a prominent figure in the Scottish arts community is shot dead during a post-performance photo call. With her initial leads turning out to be red herrings, McLeod struggles to determine the killer’s motive. Jasmine soon uncovers Tessa’s involvement in a drug-riddled Highlands estate retreat replete with occult rituals, which implicates more than a few people in the upper echelons of Scotland’s arts scene. Tessa’s disappearance in the summer of 1981 begins to look increasingly like murder, but the guilty will stop at nothing to keep the truth hidden. As Jasmine’s and McLeod’s investigations intertwine, it becomes evident that both cases are far more convoluted and dangerous than anticipated.

The difference between a good mystery and a great one. In a good mystery the reader never guesses who the killer is. In a great mystery the reader guesses just before the reveal. An awesome mystery gives you all the clues but still surprises you. This is an awesome mystery novel.
Elegant prose and sleek plot twists wrapped in shortbread. Every time I read Brookmyre I remember how much I miss Scotland.

Far to long with the details and lead up to any progress with each character. This author leaves me cold and I doubt that will bother reading another of his books. Also I have a good understanding of the English language having come from Glasgow and suggest that he does not have to impress his readers with his superior knowledge of big words.

What has happened to Chris Brookmyre? Why do we need all the back story on theatre production and funding problems? I'm less than half way through and highly unlikely to finish this book. The central character is utterly implausible and frankly shouldn't have survived the last book. The plot is wafer thin and every page is padded out with drivel.
Don't buy this book, you are only encouraging him to write more of this nonsense.
I wish I could give this no stars, I haven't read a book this bad since Chris Kyle's bone-headed autobiography, and I think he wrote that on scrap paper using crayons.

Barely OK. I had a few problems with this book: The first part of the book was really slow with all the repetition of what happened in the first book. Then, the pace picks up somewhat, but it is still kind of slow and uninteresting. The "twist ending" was if not obvious, then at least something I guessed half way into the book. The worst thing last: not to spoil the book for anyone who still wants to read it I won't go into detail, but the solution to the first murder in the book is just too unlikely. I am still a Brookmyre fan, but this book was disappointing.

Another intriguing book from Christopher Brookmyre!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and now have had to buy the first in the series. The plot wasn't predictable, the characters engaged my interest and the undercurrent of humour was much appreciated. Chris Brookmyre has a unique voice, well suited to this style of mystery. I want more.

I will get straight to the point I'm from Scotland and I like to read. I have always enjoyed the authors books as there are subtle and sometimes not so subtle references to our shared homeland. The stories are good and not the run of the mill "grab at the airport" reads.
Really like the heroine, the author makes her seem so real to life that it feels like you know her.
