A Biography of Diane Hoh. Prologue. THEY SAT IN A CIRCLE around the blazing fire, their features distorted by the dancing orange and yellow flames. Their heads were down, their jackets pulled tightly around them for warmth. They called themselves the Others. Norman dropped to a crouching position. The firelight played across his thin, pale face, casting eerie shadows that turned his skin to reddish-orange and lit a menacing yellow light in his eyes.

At first Don't Let Me Die! looks like another semi-good teen book, but once you get past the title, it's really very powerful and moving. Interestingly, Lindsay Caldwell is the pen name of Diane Hoh, who is better known in the genre of teen horror books. When Lucy is involved in a terrible car crash and loses control of her legs, she must make some tough decisions about what she is going to do. The book covers it all: the accident itself, written very well; Lucy's waking in the hospital; her horror and shock when she finally sees her ruined legs; her stay at a physical therapy hospital.

I came back to "Don't Let Me Die" many times during my adolescent youth. It's easy to get lost in the drama and the thrill, and even easier to find yourself befriending the characters. I think many young girls see themselves in Lucy St. Cloud. Hoh brings many teenage frustrations in a believable, lovable plot. From losing a father at a young age, watching your mother fall in love with the "enemy," turning your life upside down due to a freak accident . . . it's all there. Yes, there are sorrowful moments in the pages, but you will soon learn what strength, courage, determination, heart, and discipline offer when you connect them. I recommend this book for young teens and adults alike. I literally read my copy until it fell apart!
