My Memories of Six Reigns was published in 1956. Being a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, and having lived to 84 years old, Marie Louise had experienced a significant amount of history. She had lived during the reigns of six monarchs, attended four coronations, and countless family functions throughout Europe, lived through two World Wars and seen major changes in the Royal Family – particularly in the way it interacted with the British people. A fascinating glimpse into a fascinating life, lived from the well ordered world of the late Victorian era, through the turbulent years following the World War II.

I have read this book several times because it is like visiting a favorite great aunt who has fascinating memories of life from the late nineteenth all the way to the mid twentieth century. Only this one was born a royal princess, the daughter of Queen Victoria's daughter Helena and her husband Duke Christian of Schleswig Holstein. Princess Marie Louise was of the same generation as
King George V and Queen Mary, so she would be Prince William's great great great aunt.

Married in 1891 at age 19 to a German prince, Aribert of Anhalt, she endured a miserable childless life with him until 1900, when her father in law had the marriage annulled. It is thought that the prince was caught in a very compromising position with another man. Princess Marie Louise considered herself married for the rest of her life, although she never lived with Prince Aribert again.

The rest of her life was happily filled with royal duties, family, and travel. She describes her many friends and relations, many of them royal cousins, nieces and nephews giving us a detailed picture of life at that level of British society. She remained curious and modern thinking until the end of her life, rolling with the many changes that Great Britain underwent through both world wars and the loss of her empire. She was able to see much more of the world than many people in her position and had the memory and talent to describe everything. Delicious!!

This is strictly for lovers of historical ephemera...an old lady's recollections of her family life over a period of 80 plus years. The fact that this old lady is Her Highness, Princess Marie Louise of Great Britain, and that her family is the much extended royal family of many countries. Marie Louise was the grandaughter of Queen Victoria and the daughter of Victoria's youngest daughter, Helena. As the Queen had nine children who all married into various royal houses in Europe and Russia, the spread of Marie Louise's cousins was huge, making her a relative of nearly everybody with any connections at all to any country with a present or past monarchy. It's a fascinating story, with photos, of how these people were just the same as any family with their feuds and squabbles but how, as most families do, they presented a united front when it was required. I loved the descriptions of the grand ceremonies and formal occasions and the masses of jewellery which were de rigueur in those times. Another thing which intrigued me was her detailed descriptions of the very rigid rules of etiquette among the upper classes, with particular attention paid to the rules for VERY formal occasions, such as presentation at Court. I read this book when it was first published in the fifties and enjoyed it just as much the second time around, with the added bonus of its being printed on beautiful paper which was delightful to the touch.

Princess Marie Louise writes as though she is directly addressing the reader, giving the impression that you are two friends sitting over a cup of tea. Her memories are not always sequential but move to and fro as she digresses into brief descriptions of different characters - a wonderful description of the Empress Frederick, and several beautiful anecdotes about Queen Victoria. The princess' character shines through her writing - and her character is obviously gentle and loving. Even when she writes of the terrible treatment she received from her husband, she writes without malice and doesn't hesitate to say that she was not entirely blameless (although I think she was!!). This lovely book is such an intimate portrayal of life among the many fascinating royalties of the early 20th century...and beyond.
