Still rarer is successful children's poetry by a poet known equally for other work, such as Christina Rossetti. These verses - deceptively simple, light, often like a nursery rhyme in character - consider such topics as childhood activities, children's cruelty and gentleness, roses and wild flowers, nesting birds and farm animals, cold winter and blossoming spring.

Books specifically for children existed by the 17th century. Before that, books were written mainly for adults – although some later became popular with children. In Europe, Gutenberg's invention of the printing press around 1440 made possible mass production of books, though the first printed books were quite expensive and remained so for a long time

Although children’s songs have been recorded and studied in some cultures more than others, they appear to be universal in human society.

Children's literature or juvenile literature includes stories, books, magazines, and poems that are made for children. Modern children's literature is classified in two different ways: genre or the intended age of the reader. The development of early children's literature, before printing was invented, is difficult to trace.

It is rare that a "real poet" writes poetry specifically for children, and when they do, they deserve notice. This book is quintessintially Victorian in tone, from the glorification of childhood to the obsession with death and dying. Sometimes, the results are either too morbid (there are half a dozen poems about dead babies or mommies in this book!) or too sacchrine, and some are simply pedestrian, but there are a number of truly charming and timeless poems that make this collection well worth it. It isn't Robert Louis Stevenson, but it's worth it, nevertheless!

I did not realize that the poetry was not suitable for the grandchildren I purchased it for, so I used it for two younger great nieces. The poems were not quite as timeless as I had hoped and the binding of the book itself was not impressive.

I don't understand this way of publishing books. This book is new, condition is great, but it looks like I just sat down and typed the rhymes, no pictures, nothing to make you want to read this book. I think the content might be just fine but it is presented so unattractively that I don't even want to read it. A couple of other books have arrived this way and I just wish I could tell in advance.
Rare
Nice copy with black and white illustrations.
