Some future predictions fail in interesting manners; for example, Wardrop believes that the Georgians, through a long history together, would be able to command the loyalties of the Ossetians and Abkhazians once the spirit of nationalism awoke, and failed to consider that the same spirit would also set those nationalities adrift. A fair number of mostly-indifferent illustrations, some missing in the specific version scanned in by the Gutenberg Project.

Sir (John) Oliver Wardrop (1864 – 1948) was a British diplomat and writer who became the leading foreign authority on Georgia and Trans-Caucasus region. In publishing these notes I have had but one object," he writes in the preface to this 1888 classic, "to excite the curiosity of my fellow-countrymen; the means of gratifying this curiosity are indicated in the bibliographical section. Although this is a slim volume, Wardrop was ambitious in scope: the subtitle is "Notes of Travel in a Land of Women, Wine, and Song, to Which Are Appended Historical, Literary, and Political Sketches, Specimens of the National Music, and a Compendious Bibliography.

For some minutes the bubbling of our narghiles was the only sound that broke the stillness of the night. Then the ex-cuirassier spoke out in a strong voice-the voice of a man accustomed to command Gentlemen I propose that we solemnly pass a vote of censure on the late M. de Lamartine. Bravo was our unanimous cry and the vote was carried, nemine contradicente. A rider was added, to the effect that poets should be discouraged from writing books of travel.

Oliver Wardrop was a diplomat and historian in the late 1800s. This book recounts in great detail his experiences during his first trip to Georgia in 1887, when he traveled from the shores of the Black Sea to the eastern hills of the country. He later became one of Britain's foremost authorities on the Caucasus and a master of the Georgian language, but this book captures his first impressions from initial trip and was published before he became an expert. Although this is a slim volume, Wardrop was ambitious in scope: the subtitle is "Notes of Travel in a Land of Women, Wine, and Song, to Which Are Appended Historical, Literary, and Political Sketches, Specimens of the National Music, and a Compendious Bibliography." The book also contains pen-and-ink illustrations of traditional dress, important personages, and maps. I found two things about this book fascinating and noteworthy: 1) it is a great example of British 1800s Colonial expedition notes and 2) it shows how in many ways little has changed about Georgia's culture and place in the world over the past 150 years. It is a place rich in unique culture (musical, linguistic, and cuisine) that has long been caught between the ambitions of neighboring empires - the Russians, Persians, and Turks. Many of Wardrop's observations are just as true now as they were then. "There is no reason why Georgia should not become as popular a resort as Norway or Switzerland. It is not so far away as people imagine." A book of historical importance which remains a valid and useful reference for current times.

Recommended to friends from Georgia and my family. In my experience most American have little or no knowledge of Georgia and surroundings- much of Russia relates to WWII and the so called Cold War and recent reports of aggression led by Putin in Crimea and Ukraine- however having some knowledge of the history of this vast area and its people give one a better understanding of current events.
