The characters are well drawn and there is a good balance of light and dark in all of them which always adds credibility. I know it's a good book when I find myself itching to get back to the next chapter even when I'm doing other necessary things (like work!). Of course, I now want to read the next book in the series.

I have read almost everything the wondrous Dianna Wynne Jones has ever written. Honestly, these books got me through some of the toughest times in my childhood. They transported me to a world where even the most ordinary child can make a difference; where being a little odd is a wonderful thing, and where, above all, courage, love, and loyalty win the day. I will revisit this world again and again, and will be reading it to my own children one day. RIP Dianna Wynne Jones. Thank you for the incredible world you wove for me and for children everywhere who needed to know they matter.

I'm a big fan of the author, but this book left me feeling cheated and quite a bit irritated. Unlike most of her books, this one felt like a badly written first draft. The author seems to have a fascination with everything Italian (so do I) but she fills every page with long segments of descriptions of Italian culture that is rather boring.

The people in the book are maddening underdeveloped. I have precious little idea what Tonino and Paolo really look like or the difference between Angelica and Renata's personalities. Benvenuto is the only creature with a well defined personality. The rest of the book drowns in a multitude of aunts with no apparent use other than create an atmosphere of chaos that seems stereotypical and ceased to be charming fairly quickly. The villain of the book was apparent at the very first mention, so the book really felt like following the lives of incredible stupid magicians who couldn't see what was apparent under their noses. (The subplot with the two lovers you could see coming for miles.)

And no, I'm not put off by her books. She really is a very gifted writer, and I am already immersed in another of her books.

I adore her work. This was a particularly lovely book in the series. I love that it has a foothold on realism and the humor is utterly charming. I can read them over and over and over.

This story is one I listened to as a kid. It's a beautiful story about two people caught between very different families. It's bright, magical, intriguing, and entertaining story! It will definitely remind you of Romeo and Julie but the ending is much better! It's a great read!

Tonino is a boy from a magical family who does not know spells. Angelica is also from a magical family and messes spells up. These feuding families always fight, but no one knows why. This is an enticing story I'm sure you will love very much!!!! I wish there was more!!!!!! ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Diana Wynne Jones is a master at creating fabulous worlds, and the one in this book is no exception. The characters sparkle, and the magic system employed by the two main families is so clever and inventive. The cats are charming and give a big assist to the humans in achieving a joyous ending. There is a touch of Romeo and Juliet without the tragedy and idiocy, and with lots of DWJ's trademark delightful humor---and of course, Chrestomanci! Do not miss this one!
