Kotsilibas-Davis (The Barrymores, et. Of pioneer ancestry, all-American Myrna Williams was born in 1905 on a Montana farm. As a young dancer, she was cast in "native" vamp roles in films and named Loy to suit the image. It was in the Thin Man series of the 1930s that the actress's quicksilver wit made her the ideal Nora to the late William Powell's Nick Charles

Myrna Loy is a woman ahead of her time. She discusses candidly and with amazing detail her life inside and outside the studio. From her early desire to dance, through her struggle to get "through the gates" of the MGM lot, her almost slave-like work at MGM, her transformation into the "perfect wife", and her endless humanitarian work (most notably for UNESCO), Myrna Loy's life was more complex and substantial than that of "just a Hollywood starlet.

Myrna Loy was beautiful, honest and down to earth. She possessed a frank and no nonsense approach to life. I could not put the book down. Possibly because each one was made in pieces simultaneously with 2 others perhaps, and I don't have the impression she viewed many of the final products. All very understandable, for someone whose entire life was busy.

For most of Loy's long Hollywood career she was known as "the perfect wife. On the basis of this memoir, it would seem that she was also pretty nearly "the perfect human being'' as well.

Although James Kotsilibas-Davis provides the guidance of the narrative

Although James Kotsilibas-Davis provides the guidance of the narrative. it is Myrna Loy's voice throughout that made this seem as if I was sitting down with her and having a fascinating conversation (in addition to being able to look through her scrapbooks). Those unfamiliar with Myrna Loy will likely recognize her from many "exotic" roles in the 1930's and as the delectable Nora Charles opposite William Powell in THE THIN MAN movie One of the best autobiographies I've read in some time.

Myrna Loy (born Myrna Adele Williams; August 2, 1905 – December 14, 1993) was an American film, television and stage actress. Trained as a dancer, Loy devoted herself fully to an acting career following a few minor roles in silent films. She was originally typecast in exotic roles, often as a vamp or a woman of Asian descent, but her career prospects improved greatly following her portrayal of Nora Charles in The Thin Man (1934).

The actress recalls her long, rich, and varied career in Hollywood, on the stage, and as a political activist

One of the reasons I enjoyed this book is the honesty and humor with which Miss Myrna Loy recounts the details of her interesting life. Myrna Loy was beautiful, honest and down to earth. She possessed a frank and no nonsense approach to life. I could not put the book down. She talks about early Hollywood and the many great stars she worked with through out her life providing detailed and vivid discriptions of the encounters. Her life was not without heartaches and challenges yet she prevails and goes on to have a long and distinguished career. I was already a fan, did not know much about her and ended up absolutely loving her and vowing to revisit her films as soon as possible. Many times one reads about a movie star one already likes only to be disappointed on getting to know more about that star Myrna Loy does not disappoint! What a terrific lady. Gotta love a women who speaks truth to power when her conscience is her guide. I would recommend this book to friends who love a good yarn and loves movies.

If you are a fan of Myrna Loy, you will clearly hear her lilting voice as you read her sharing her detailed memories of her youth and her years in Hollywood. Very engaging, often uplifting, full of wisdom. One of the best Hollywood autobiographies I've read.

Myrna's review (above) is an excellent detailed one,yet there are even more points that may be of interest
1) Miss Loy spends little time discussing individual movies. Possibly because each one was made in pieces
simultaneously with 2 others perhaps, and I don't have the impression she viewed many of the final products.
All very understandable, for someone whose entire life was busy. I would have liked to see her discuss
the movie "Penthouse" starring Myrna Loy,a movie made just before the Thin Man. Her mid career
persona begins to develop in that movie (and what did she think of that bow on the front of her dress?)
2) Later in life she is led to stage performances, partly for money (was that needed because she was fairly
careless with it in her glory days)? Initially nervous about stage performances, she became quite gifted
in that medium too
3) I found the book slow to read because she includes so much detail (and almost all of it presents something
new)
4) The photographs are an essential part of the book. The photo of her as a 15 year old is striking.
Next in line,I would say is the studio shot of her in "the" Thin Man dress. And the cover tells
us she was a red head.
All and all an impressive life. She was brought up well, and it never left her.Example, in returning for a winter
visit to her birthplace (in Montana) ,she takes a plain cloth coat, rather than furs
