Nothing personal
Written like a soap opera. I could almost hear the break points with the music crescendo playing. OK read with lots of plot twists, (like a soap opera). Some of it is just very silly. People constantly muttering aloud to themselves just became annoying after a while. Had to push myself to continue to the end.

I haven't read many of Lisa Jackson's books but I have loved every one. This one is no exception. There's more twists and turns in this book & it keeps you reading. The story is filled with a varity of characters, you have Ava, the mother of a missing child, Noah. Ava is trying to find her son while trying to convince people she is not crazy. You have Ava's husband Wyatt, her cousin Jewel Anne whose's in a wheelchair due to a boating accident that she blames Ava for. There's also Khole, Ava's best friend from high school who is now her care taker & was the girlfriend to Ava's brother who was killed in the boating accident that left Jewel Anne in the wheelchair. You have Dern the hired ranch hand who is not what he seems. There's also a convicted murdered, Lester, who has escaped from the mental hospital years ago that use to be on the island that Ava owns, which is now closed. All the characters live on this isolated island. There are other characters but these are the main one. Most of the action takes place on the island. The question throughout the book is: Is Ava really crazy or is someone gaslighting her trying to drive her crazy & what happened to her son. As I said in the beginning there are so many twist and turns as people get killed & the police main suspect is none other than Ava. Is Ava a murderer or is someone setting her up, if so who & why. Will Ava find her son & what happened to him. I recommend this book and if you like to try to figure out what's going on in a book you'll love this one. If you are looking for a romantic mystery you won't be happy, very little if any romance, but lots of intrigue & just when you think you have it figured out something else happens & you don't know what's going on again. Read & enjoy as I did.

A very good book, the author has created a mystery that directs your thoughts in several directions, providing clues and hints that challenge the reader to invest time into figuring out whether Ava's thoughts are valid or that of a mentally ill person. There are seemingly obvious red herrings that are actually relevant, and there are seemingly important clues that are not perceived as the red herrings that they are.

The author includes symptoms consistent with mental illness through a presentation of Ava's thought patterns, and this frustrates the reader because it prevents the reader from getting important information; however, that lack of information reflects the same frustration that Ava experiences, and the author uses this empathic technique to help the reader better understand the main character's frame of mind. However, the mindset that is intended to enhance the depiction of the main character's thoughts is a bit inconsistent in that it seems the recovering memories are limited in scope: only a few details in a given time period are remembered--but surely there are other things that happened during that missing time period that never get mentioned, events that would perhaps not be directly related to the mystery but which would help to validate the apparent memory issues. One major concern with this writing is that one aspect of a hallucination is not explained in the denoument; Ava questions throughout the story the reason she sees her son on the dock when the events from the original event are not consistent consistent with that particular location. Perhaps this is intended to be a symptom of the mental illness issues and have no other valid explanation, but this major mystery element is not clarified though aspects of other visual and audio hallucination are clarified as valid or imagined.

A good mystery involving a missing child, mental illness, small town mindsets, and dysfunctional family relationships, this book is recommended to anyone who has a few free consecutive hours to dedicate to reading. Once you start this book, you will not want to put it down.

I agree with Amie Taylor's review calling this book the best of the old gothic style books with the best of the modern added in. This book immediately reminded me of Phyllis A. Whitney's books. The location and setting was always a huge part of her books, in fact she always visited and did a great amount of research about the areas she wrote about. The location was almost like a character in her books.

This book is almost like that, as the island where most of this books takes place is like a creepy character. Ms. Jackson has done a great job in setting up the story and characters and just keeps ramping up the suspense and scary factors until you do want to know....what the heck is going on!!

I have read a few of Lisa Jackson's books and this is not like anything she has written in quite some time. This was spooky, suspenseful, and just very different for me. Yes it had the closed down old hospital for "crazy people" that has been in some of her other books, but this was just different and so much better. I would venture to say for me this was the best Lisa Jackson book I have read!

I wanted to love this book as much as the blurb intrigued me. Strike one.
I long books that hold my interest. Strike two.
I wanted the book to end with a wow-I never saw that coming, but it makes perfect sense. And you're out.
This isn't a bad book. But it isn't a great or even good book either. Enough people have summarized the book that I'll go light with the recap.
Ava's son Noah went missing two years ago and she went A little crazy. She's convinced he's still alive. She owns and lives in a gothic mansion with her creepy husband, odd servants, and nutty relatives, none are very likable, except Ava when she refuses to be pushed around. Oh, there's a mysterious stranger, too. And the most unethical therapist ever to walk the planet who wouldn't know the word confidentiality if it smacked her in the face.
If you can get past all that and the utter lack of realism in any of the characters or in the storyline, you might like this book.
