Carrauntoohil and MacGillycuddy's Reeks: A Walking Guide to Ireland's Highest Mountains. Dillion, Paddy (1993). Hillwalkers ignoring a sign warning them to stay away from potentially dangerous paths near the summit of Ireland’s highest mountain are putting themselves in serious danger. Kerry’s Coomloughra Horseshoe is virtually impossible to match in an Irish context, as it takes in our three highest summits and offers an adrenalin–filled crossing of a memorable mountain ridge, great long-range coastal views and a bird’s-eye panorama over some of Killarney’s renowned lakes and fells.

This guidebook, the second edition of Hillwalker s Guide to Mangerton, has been expanded to include eight new walks and cover a greater area with new colour photographs and sketch maps. The guidebook is intended for those familiar with hillwalking and navigation, but not necessarily with the area covered. I recommend you use the guidebook in conjunction with the Ordnance Survey maps on Kerry, nos 78 and 79 in the Discovery series. The Mangerton range of hills forms a triangle between the towns of Killarney, Kenmare and the village of Glenflesk on the Killarney - Ballyvourney road. On these thirteen hill, road and track walks you will explore the ancient mythological site of the Paps, the extinct volcano at Bennaunmore, the glaciated loughs near Mangerton, the Horse s Glen and some ancient woodland on the Old Kenmare Road. With luck you should see red deer near Mangerton, wild goats in Cappagh Glen and falcons and ravens soaring overhead near remote mountain peaks.
