A great read if you want the "science" behind Metalworking. I was expecting more details about panel cutting, repairs and other typical aspects of bodyworking that this book did not provide. This book basically talks in detail of the characteristics of metal and how to understand those principals to form metal. If you are interested in actual bodywork procedures and tips, do not bother with this book.

I had a copy of the first edition, loaned it out and never got it back. This updated edition is still good for cars prior to the seventies when the type of steel changed. The first edition was somewhat better on the basics, but this is still a great book, and worth the price. If you want the basics for classic cars try to find the first edition that's what I am going to do.

The book I got was in great shape with no markings, not dirty or stained at all, much better looking than in the picture (that would depend on the quality of the book and the vendor). Having been quoted outrageous amounts of money for fixing my classic car, this book makes me appreciate more what may go into the kind of a quality sheet metal repair. Even though the steps are clear and I may take on my own sheet metal work, if I ultimately don't, at least I will be informed about what needs to go into the repair and to use that to choose a repair shop. Well worth the purchase.

The book itself is clear and informative and removes the mystery of sheet metal repair, making it something a person with determination and access to some basic tools might take on themselves. Some of the methods are outdated (for the most part bondo has completely replaced "leading" as body fill, for better or worse) and there are more modern methods of welding, but the basic repair methods are the same. This book proves that there is an alternative to the modern concept of "remove and replace."

Nice, book in much better shape than picture.

Best primer on the basic metalurgy and techniques of straightening sheet metal on cars I've found. The material on welding is dated but the material on metal beating is timeless and detailed. Just slapped a couple dents out of my Austin Healey with a bit of this learning and I'm a happy restorer. This and Classic Car Bodywork by Martin Thaddeus reveals the secrets.
