The Art of Coursesetting, by Louie Anderson, first came out in 2004 and at the time was the only written instruction book for routesetters. The book covered all aspects of routesetting and was geared to helping novices improve their craft. The entire book was written to present the fundamental approaches to many different aspects of setting, while leaving a lot of room for personal interpretation and exploration of each of them. I don’t think that certain aspects of setting can be taught, so I intentionally did not get too detailed in my writing.

This wisdom is the culmination of hundreds of successful competitions and offers the insight necessary to make your event all that it can be.

The title is an accurate summation of the contents - the fundamentals of routesetting.

You won't find move-by-move problem skeletons, detailed technical discussion of specific movements, or guides to replicating classic problems. There's a gaping hole in published setting literature for this sort of information - but this addresses setting at a more important level - the foundation.

This is a deceptively complex topic, as most setters know. This book really does an excellent job of helping newer setters build a solid foundation & understanding of the art of setting.

Many of the common pitfalls are addressed, (painful problems, height dependency, dangerous movement, ego-centric setting, ignoring the customer base, hold selection, etc) always with an aura of positivity and confidence. You won't read this book and think "Wow, setting is much harder than I thought". You'll simply be reminded of the intricacy of the activity, and I suspect you'll approach setting more thoughtfully as a result.

I'd encourage any setter with a month or more of setting experience to read this. Even if you've been setting for 10 years, you'll probably learn a thing or two, unless you've been fortunate enough to be exposed to many setters, approaches, and philosophies by traveling and setting around the world. There are really only a small handful of people in the climbing community who this describes. I suspect that all of them have read this already.

There are excellent setter essays at the end of this publication, and a solid guide to organizing competitive events.

There's certainly more to be written on this topic, but this is an excellent starting point.

A good overview, but I was hoping for more on the art of route setting. Such as forcing movement with different types of holds and hold patterns, or more on equipment techniques.

There is a lot on the business side of route setting. If you want to be a professional route setter, or work full time in a gym, this book is probably more useful to you.
