This two day workshop provided a forum on the needs, goals, methods, and best practices for mentoring engineering students interested in an academic career and young faculty beginning such a career. This book is a distillation of the presentations and discussions of a June 2004 workshop on mentoring for academic careers in engineering which was jointly supported by PAESMEM and the Stanford University School of Engineering. This chapter is an overview of the book. There is no single agreed upon set of best practices to serve as guides for mentors, but the presentations and discussions produced a collection of variations on common themes that provide a good start.

This book is a 'must read' for anyone considering or 'smack in the middle' of an academic career. I think this is a great book for anyone interested in a faculty position in science and engineering. In particular, the incorporation of advice from those in the field makes it unique and invaluable. Kim Needy, Assistant Professor, University of Pittsburgh.
