Ihlenfeld Dog Days by Dave Ihlenfeld caught my eye at the library. Of course, the main character in this book is the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. I've seen the Wienermobile a time or two in my life, and it's so ridiculous that it can't help but raise a smile. The cover sports a Wienermobile parking in front of a suburban home. While I'm no fan of Oscar Mayer products and have never seen the Wienermobile in person, I was curious. And that's the genius behind this marketing tool. Ihlenfeld does a good job of interspersing the history of Oscar Mayer (the man as well as the company), and the Wienermobile without allowing it to weigh down the narrative.

Six different Wienermobiles drive across the . The first WIENERMOBILE was created in 1936 by Carl Mayer. The 1952 WIENERMOBILE has been living for years in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan (and in our hearts forever, obviously). The 1969 WIENERMOBILE model featured Ford Thunderbird taillights, a Chevy motor home frame and averaged 187 smiles per gallon.

In his memoir Dog Days: A Year in the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, Dave Ihlenfeld writes that Carl originally considered a Wienercopter and a Wienerscooter before settling on the Wienermobile as a nod to the company’s earlier delivery wagons

In his memoir Dog Days: A Year in the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, Dave Ihlenfeld writes that Carl originally considered a Wienercopter and a Wienerscooter before settling on the Wienermobile as a nod to the company’s earlier delivery wagons. Originally the Wienermobile was driven by a tiny chef named Little Oscar, who gave away free samples and plastic toys. Kraig believes Little Oscar was inspired by the dwarves of German folklore, but he was also short enough for children to look at him in the eye, which is appealing if you’re small

It was the ultimate post-college road trip: a year-long journey in a 27-foot-long fiberglass hotdog across the US and Europe. Rife with breakdowns, meaty puns, the burdens of instant celebrity and more Wiener Whistles than anyone could ever hope for, Ihlenfeld's uproarious recounting of his time behind the wheel is a coming-of-age story-as irreverent as it is touching-of learning about life, love, and (sausage) links, ultimately arriving at the realization that that the future is anything but a straight road.

Originally bought this book for a friend as a birthday gift. As I flipped through, the story was so interesting that I just ended up reading it myself. I am from the same city as the author and I could relate to many of the humorous facts about our "quaint" area that he described. It is an entertaining and quick read.

Back in 2000, my friend and I went to Mardi Gras with our husbands as we had done for many years prior. We took some awesome photos alongside the two Wienermobiles that were parked in our hotel parking lot in Metairie. Lo and behold, I believe this was also the same year that the author was at that hotel and one of those Wienermobiles was his. Wish we knew you needed a ride downtown, Dave. We had a place you could have hung out with us on St. Charles Ave. that had a BATHROOM! Anyway, we still cherish our Wienermobile photos and the handful of Wiener Whistles the crew gave us when we saw them during breakfast at the hotel. Thanks for this fun story.

After seeing the Weinermobile come to my town, I have since wondered what it would be like to drive one around. Well, this book tells the tale of the twists and turns, ups and downs, of a year driving the Weinermobile. Dave Ihlenfeld does a great job detailing the process of joining the ranks of the Weinermobile drivers, the highs and lows of touring the country in these so-called vehicles, all the while giving some interesting history of Oscar Meyer's most recognizable icon and some fun personal stories and adventures as well!

A fun and easy read. I highly recommend this book!

What do you do when you are about to graduate from college and have no idea what to do? Panic? Move in with your parents? Or grab the keys to a giant hot dog and take off across the country! For everyone who struggled to find their way, David reminds us not to miss out on the fun along the way, and not to settle for the "just OK." A great read from a promising new author juxtaposing the struggles of a generation searching for a meaningful career with the building of the Oscar Mayer processed meat empire- love it!

Everything you wanted to know about the Wienermobile, but were afraid to ask. Very enjoyable read. You will relish reading about the pickles (sorry) Dave finds himself in on his year long journey inside the famous car. Forget the Batmobile this is the car you want to know about.

In a world of war, terrorists, and economic instability, put yourself inside the Weinermobile. Take a trip with Dave. Smile, Escape! Dog Days is a great memoir of fun, responsible young people driving the Weinermobile through the US and Europe. Well written. Great fun. And...if you are an older reader like myself, Dog Days might even remind you of the days of a little freer spirit. I am an avid reader. Few books are memorable. Dog Days is. I'm still smiling.
enjoyable quick read.
not exactly Kerouac or travels with Charlie
