The Domino Principle by Kennedy is the kind of book that reminds you exactly how perfect the mystery/thriller genre can be. This is a short book. But a lot is packed into these few pages.

As time goes by, I am noticing that the authors of the 70's really worked on dialog. You just dont see writers today with the skill set or ability to pull off what Kennedy is doing here. You can look back to the past and find writers like McBain or Westlake and these authors use dialog to expound upon some big ideas. Ideas that can seem casual while thrown out in a conversation, but will sink a story if the protagonist is musing internally upon them.

Whats nice here is you will not know what is happening here for most of the story. Their are several hints along the way, but the suspense nonetheless builds. You follow the main character here from place to place, unsure of what will happen next.

Basically, this is a story about a jailbird. Your not sure if he was placed there as an innocent man or not. One thing for sure is that he is a sort of fish out of water. He's smart, his cell mate is smart too. This guy gets visited by some mysterious characters in jail and is offered freedom for doing a job. Your not sure what the job is. Step by step, you follow the character towards the mysterious job... and thats the crux of the story.

From what I just wrote, it doesn't seem like much. But the writing is exceptional. Totally recommend this noirish hard edged story.

I just re-read this after several years. Quick but awesome thriller with some of the tightest writing you'll find in a novel of this genre. It's hard not to empathize with the helplessness the 2 protagonists feel. For a 30+ year old novel it has aged well, and if anything seems more plausible today than ever.

The Domino Principle by Adam Kennedy is a fast paced thrill ride of a book. The main character Roy Tucker provides the narration. As the story begins, Roy is serving a twenty year sentence for murder in an Indiana state prison. One day, not much different from any other, Roy is visited by a mysterious stranger, Marvin Tagge, who has the power to set Roy free in exchange for services to be revealed later.
We soon learn that Tagge works for a secret, albeit powerful, organization and it's Roy's skill as an expert marksman the organization covets.
As the narrative unfolds, Roy finds he has metaphorically made a bargain with the devil and that any and all attempts to extricate himself are met with overwhelming force. Try as he might to free himself, Roy becomes a helpless pawn in a sinister assassination plot.
