Mr. Montagu was born into a working-class Jewish family in London's East End. He studied anthropology and psychology at the University of London with Charles Spearman and Karl Pearson, founders of the eugenics movement. Mr. Montagu later worked to disprove their theory that criminal traits were inherited. Montagu came to the United States in 1927, and obtained a doctorate at Columbia University in New York. He studied under ''Papa'' Franz Boas, teacher of Margaret Mead and Ruth Benedict.
