This book is special. Extremely special. It is written from a perspective that can be appreciated most from those whom have benefitted directly from Odyssey House. While millions of us, and the entire world as a whole, have benefitted from Odyssey House indirectly, those with a direct connection have an undying passion reflecting that of Judianne Densen Gerber. While she had her quirks, this book is much more than a book - it is a tool that has helped better the world, and for those with intimate knowledge of it, a tool that continuously reminds the reader to continue being your best self, living your life with undying integrity.

Her creation has saved hundreds of thousands of lives, and while this may not be the most entertaining read, it is one of the more special ones.

Judianne Densen-Gerber and her ghost writer have obviously joined forces in creating a book of sorts carrying no great instruction to the public's education of children and drug abuse. There is a sensational quality to her writing, particularly in her depiction of child and young adult addiction. She heralds her Odyssey House as a panacea for all "her" downtrodden children. In fact, after reading this book, I got the feeling that these children are nothing more to her than a means to her own financial end. She would be better off in private practice employing her Freudian training as a psychiatrist i.e. listening and not speaking...
Certainly, she should not be writing. She did not impress me as an honest saviour!

I was in Odysey House in 1977. It wasn't for drugs but my mother suffers from schizophrenia still and I wasn't dealing with it well then. In 1981, my younger brother shot himself 3 days after 16th BD. He asked me a couple weeks prior if I thought Mom would ever be alright. Sadly I said I didn't think so. I wished Leslie would of gone through Odysey house. Btw, my Dad starved himself, older brother and his son both died from over dosing. I'm still doing ok in spite of it all.
